Start by checking what is using space: on many Galaxy phones, open Settings > Device care or Battery and device care > Storage. Review large files, duplicates, unused apps and items in the recycle bin before deleting anything. If cleanup is not enough, a microSD card may help—but support and maximum capacity depend on your exact phone model.
Check what is taking up space
Open Settings and look for Device care or Battery and device care, then tap Storage. Review the storage categories and, where available, inspect large files, duplicate files and unused apps. Samsung’s Device care guide describes storage management, while its cleanup guidance includes reviewing the recycle bin.
Names, locations and available tools vary by Galaxy model, software version and market. If the path differs, search Settings for “Storage” or open the My Files app and review its storage analysis options.
Free internal space without buying anything
Use the storage review to identify files you actually recognize and no longer need. Downloads, large videos, duplicate media and apps you no longer use are common candidates. Delete selectively rather than removing unfamiliar files or clearing app data indiscriminately.

After deletion, check the relevant recycle bin or trash. Some deleted items remain there until you empty it, so they may continue to occupy space. Confirm that anything important is backed up or otherwise recoverable before permanently removing it.
When a microSD card can help
A microSD card can provide removable file storage on Galaxy models that support one. Samsung’s UK guide, updated July 14, 2026, says some compatible devices support up to 1 TB of additional SD-card space; not all Galaxy phones have a card slot, and the supported maximum differs by model. Check your exact model’s specifications and card compatibility before buying.

For a compatible phone, Samsung documents this file-transfer process through My Files:
- Insert the microSD card.
- Open My Files and select the files to transfer.
- Tap Move or Copy.
- Return to My Files Home, choose SD card, and select a destination folder.
- Tap Move here or Copy here.
Samsung’s instructions describe this as a My Files workflow; it cannot be used to move or copy files to other apps such as Gallery. Do not assume it moves apps, all app data or every Gallery item.

Cloud storage and USB drives: backup is not the same as internal storage
Samsung lists Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and Dropbox among cloud services compatible with its devices. Uploading, syncing and deleting a local copy are separate actions: confirm that a file is backed up and accessible before removing it from the phone. Sync behavior can also mean a deletion is reflected elsewhere, depending on the service and settings.
Samsung’s OneDrive information describes 5 GB in its basic plan. Storage limits, terms, availability and prices can change and may vary by region, so check the current plan details directly before relying on a specific allowance.

Samsung also documents USB storage connected over USB-C as an external backup option in its Maintenance mode guidance. A USB drive can hold a separate copy, but this does not establish that every Galaxy phone supports every drive or that external storage permanently expands internal space for apps.

If you need space immediately, start with storage review and selective cleanup. If you want to keep personal files locally but off the phone, first confirm microSD support for your model. For a separate copy, consider cloud or USB backup and verify it before deleting originals.
