Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsGet more from a Roku by using voice commands, finding a misplaced remote, listening privately, sharing media, setting up Guest Mode, or—on a Roku TV—turning off the picture while audio continues. Which options you can use depends on your Roku model, remote, Roku OS version, app, and region, so check compatibility when a feature is missing.
Use voice commands instead of typing
A paired Roku voice remote can search and control supported features without being pointed at the player or TV. Depending on your device and region, example commands include searching for comedies, launching The Roku Channel, turning captions on, showing news, or playing music. They are examples, not guarantees that every command or result works on every Roku.
With a push-to-talk remote, hold the voice button while speaking; it listens only while you hold the button. Hands-free commands require a compatible Roku Voice Remote Pro model and hands-free voice enabled. Roku lists voice search and control in English, German, Portuguese, French, and Spanish in supported countries. Movie, show, and actor discovery is listed as US English only. Check Roku’s voice remote guide and voice search and control instructions for device and regional details.
Find a misplaced remote
Lost Remote Finder makes a compatible voice remote with a built-in speaker play a sound for up to 60 seconds. Roku says speaker holes on the back can help identify supported remotes. Depending on the setup, start the finder with a hands-free voice command, from the Roku mobile app, or with a physical finder button on some players such as Roku Ultra. See Roku’s Lost Remote Finder guide and lost-remote guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- If the remote batteries are dead or too low, it will not sound.
- The remote may also fail to respond if it is outside wireless-network range.
- If your remote lacks a speaker, check compatibility before considering an upgraded remote; not every remote works with every Roku device.
Listen privately with headphones
Roku private listening has two possible routes: a compatible voice remote with a headphone jack, or the Roku mobile app on iOS or Android with a Roku device that supports the feature. The app route is not available on every setup; if its headphone icon is missing, your device may not support mobile Headphone Mode. Roku does not establish that any Bluetooth headphones pair directly with every Roku, so use a connection method supported by your remote or device.
For smoother playback, connect your headphones and switch on private listening before starting a show or movie. Roku warns that activating it after playback begins may stop and restart the video while audio synchronizes. Its private-listening troubleshooting guide explains the feature and common issue.

Share phone or computer content on your TV
Pick the method according to what you want to show: selected personal media, a compatible Apple device, a full mirrored screen, or supported video that continues playing through Roku. These methods have different device, app, and software requirements.
| Method | Best for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Play on Roku or Photo Streams | Sharing personal media such as photos and videos from a phone. | Use the Roku mobile app and check which sharing option your device supports. Roku describes these as personal-media methods. |
| AirPlay | Sharing from a compatible Apple device. | The Roku model and software must support AirPlay, and both devices must be on the same wireless network. Roku lists specific compatible model families; some listed device types require Roku OS 10.0 or later. Check the AirPlay and HomeKit guide. |
| Screen mirroring | Showing a supported phone, tablet, or computer screen on the Roku. | Start mirroring on the source device, then allow its connection request on the Roku. Android and Windows instructions start on the source device; Apple devices use AirPlay where supported. See Roku’s screen-mirroring guide. |
| Casting | Continuing supported movies or shows on the Roku from a compatible app. | Both the app and Roku must support casting. Casting is not the same as mirroring an entire screen; see Roku’s overview of ways to share phone media. |
If an AirPlay or mirroring connection does not appear, check Roku model and software support, the source device’s settings, and whether both devices are on the same wireless network where required. On Roku TVs, Fast TV Start can keep the network connection while the TV is powered off; Streambars have a related Fast start setting. Roku warns that these features use significantly more power than normal standby.

Set up Guest Mode for visitors
Guest Mode lets visitors sign in to their own apps and services without using the host’s app accounts. Guests choose an automatic sign-out date, and the owner can sign them out remotely. On sign-out, added apps and account information are removed. Roku says guests cannot access the owner’s apps or make purchases billed to the host account.
- On the Roku device, open Settings and look for Guest Mode (called Auto Sign Out on some Roku OS versions), or enable it through your Roku account.
- Enter the owner’s Roku PIN when prompted.
- Have the guest sign in to their own apps and services and select an automatic sign-out date.
- If needed, use the owner’s Roku account to sign the guest out remotely.
Guest Mode availability varies by region. Roku’s owner guide and guest guide cover setup and use.

Turn off the picture while audio continues (Roku TV only)
This is a Roku TV feature, not a setting for Roku streaming players such as Express, Streaming Stick, or Ultra. While content is playing on a Roku TV, press Star on the remote, choose Options > Picture off (which may be labeled Turn off display), then press OK. Audio continues; press OK to restore the picture. Roku says this works with apps and inputs. Fast TV Start can also allow audio playback or voice commands with the screen off. See Roku’s screen-off audio guide.
