A backyard fabrication setup has reportedly produced a few DRAM cells, but not a complete RAM stick that can be installed in a PC. HotHardware described the project on April 22, 2026, based on a video by YouTuber Dr Semiconductor. The distinction matters: making experimental memory cells is a fabrication milestone, not the same as building a working computer memory module.
What the backyard memory project reportedly achieved
HotHardware reports that Dr Semiconductor fabricated a few DRAM cells in a home workshop described as a “memory shed fab.” The report does not give an exact cell count or measurements of capacity, reliability, yield, or performance. It explicitly says the work had not produced a complete RAM stick usable in a PC. Read HotHardware’s April 22, 2026 report.
What the reported fabrication involved
HotHardware describes a process that included preparing and cleaning silicon, forming oxide, applying adhesive and photoresist layers, exposing a mask with UV light, and testing transistor voltage. Those are details attributed to the report’s account of the video; they should not be treated as independently verified instructions or as a recipe for reproducing the work.
Why a few cells are not a RAM module
A DRAM cell is a small element of memory. A usable PC module requires many cells integrated into a larger array and a finished module that can connect to a computer. The report says the maker discussed trying to connect enough cells into a larger array as a possible next stage. That is a stated future goal, not evidence that a complete array or PC-compatible module has been made.

How to interpret the claim
- Demonstrated output: a few reported DRAM cells, with no exact count stated.
- Integration: no completed PC-usable stick is reported; a larger array is described only as a possible next step.
- Evidence: the account is secondary reporting by HotHardware. Its linked video is described as 18 minutes long, but was not available for direct review here.
Because the available account provides no module-level measurements, it does not establish comparable capacity, reliability, production yield, or speed to commercial RAM. The careful takeaway is that home fabrication has reportedly reached a small experimental-cell milestone—not that a home-built replacement for PC memory exists.
