If coworkers say your video is freezing, breaking up, or arriving late while you can still see and hear them, your connection’s upload performance may be part of the problem. Upload speed is the rate at which your device sends data outward; during a call, that includes your camera and microphone feed. But slow upload is not the only possible cause: unstable Wi-Fi, latency, packet loss, competing household traffic, VPN routing, device limits, or another participant’s connection can cause similar symptoms.

Start by measuring upload and download during a bad call, then compare the result with the guidance for your meeting app and call type. If a wired connection improves the call, focus on Wi-Fi. If wired tests remain slow, look at competing traffic, your service plan, and your provider.

Why upload speed affects what coworkers see and hear

A video call sends information in both directions. Your device uploads your camera and microphone stream; it downloads the other participants’ streams. A strong download result therefore does not prove that your outgoing video is well supported.

When the upload path has too little capacity—or its performance varies—the meeting app may reduce outgoing video quality, or audio and video may lag or drop. Bandwidth is not the only measure of call quality: latency and packet loss can also disrupt a call even when a speed test reports a reasonable rate. Google Meet identifies bandwidth issues as a major cause of poor video quality, while Microsoft Teams provides in-call measures such as round-trip time and packet loss. Google Meet’s connection troubleshooting guidance and Teams call-health guidance cover these separate factors.

Other people in the home can consume the available capacity with streaming, large uploads, or their own calls. Wi-Fi interference or distance from the router can make performance unstable. A VPN, computer load, camera or microphone configuration, and the other participant’s connection can also be involved. Microsoft notes that a high-quality call requires enough bandwidth at both ends of the conversation. Microsoft’s audio and video troubleshooting guidance explains why a problem you notice does not automatically point to your own upload speed.

How much upload speed a video call may need

There is no single upload-speed threshold that guarantees a good work call. Recommendations depend on the service, number of participants, video quality, and other network conditions. Use the figures below as platform-specific guidance, not as a universal internet standard.

Zoom publishes different recommendations for other modes and call scenarios, so match the guidance to your actual meeting setup rather than choosing the closest-looking figure. Google’s 3.2 Mbps advice is likewise for a large remote event when a connection seems slow, not a requirement for every Meet call. Apps can adapt video quality to network conditions, and a speed-test rate is not interchangeable with an app’s send-limit metric.

How to diagnose the cause during a bad call

  1. Record what is failing. Note whether coworkers hear or see you poorly, whether incoming video is affected too, and whether the issue occurs at particular times or locations. Ask whether other participants are having trouble; if several people report the same symptom, your connection may not be the only cause.
  2. Measure while the problem is happening. Run a speed test and note both upload and download. Repeat it to see whether the results are stable, and compare them with your ISP plan and your meeting platform’s recommendation for the call type and desired video quality. A test taken at another time may not describe the conditions during the failing call. Microsoft provides a speed-test guide.
  3. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if possible. Connect the computer to the router with Ethernet and see whether the call improves. If it does, investigate Wi-Fi placement, signal, obstructions, or congestion. Microsoft describes 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi as longer-range but often more congested, while 5 GHz is faster and less congested but has shorter range and passes through obstacles less effectively. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi and home-layout guidance
  4. Check for competing use. Temporarily pause large transfers and household streaming, close nonessential apps and tabs, and avoid multiple bandwidth-heavy calls at once. Google advises limiting other internet activity during a video conference. Google Meet connection troubleshooting
  5. Inspect in-call health and other likely causes. In Teams, review call health for round-trip time and packet loss. Teams describes under 200 ms round-trip time and under 2% packet loss as typical values; these are Teams call-health references, not universal test standards. Its send-limit value is an app metric, not your ISP plan’s speed limit. If policy permits, test whether VPN routing affects Meet latency. Also check computer performance, camera and microphone settings, and whether another participant has a poor connection. Teams call-health guidance and Google Meet troubleshooting

What to fix first

If Ethernet improves the call

The difference points toward the local wireless connection rather than proving that your ISP upload is inadequate. Move closer to the router or reduce obstacles between it and your computer; try the less congested 5 GHz band if it has adequate range where you work. An Ethernet cable is a useful comparison if one is available, but borrowing or reusing a cable is a sensible first step. Wiring the computer cannot raise an upload cap imposed by your internet plan.

If calls improve when other activity stops

Schedule large uploads or downloads outside meeting time where practical, and ask household members to pause demanding activity during important calls. Close apps that may be sending or receiving data in the background. Google’s advice to limit other internet activity during a conference addresses this shared-capacity problem, not just the speed advertised for the connection. Google Meet connection troubleshooting

If the issue appears tied to Teams, Meet, or a VPN

Use the app’s call-health information to distinguish throughput from latency or packet loss. If Teams reports a send limit, interpret it as a Teams metric rather than a statement of your ISP’s maximum. If your organization permits it, compare Meet performance with and without the VPN; do not bypass workplace security rules. A change in VPN performance can point to routing or policy effects, but does not alone establish the cause.

If repeated wired tests remain below your plan

Contact your ISP with the plan details, test results, and times of the problem. Repeated low results over Ethernet are more useful evidence of a service-side or modem/router connection issue than a single Wi-Fi test. Also update router firmware and your computer’s network-adapter drivers. Consider a router or adapter replacement only if the evidence points to local hardware; an upgrade cannot increase the upload speed your plan provides.

How to interpret speed, latency, and packet loss together

Upload and download describe throughput: how much data can move in each direction over time. Latency describes delay, commonly measured as round-trip time, while packet loss describes data that fails to arrive. These are related to call quality but are not the same measurement. A high upload result does not rule out delay or packet loss, and good latency does not create more upload capacity.
