Verdict: Nintendo Switch 2 is the better fit if you want Nintendo’s newer games, a larger 1080p handheld screen and stronger TV output while keeping access to many original Switch games. Its trade-offs are meaningful: Nintendo estimates only about 2–6.5 hours of battery life, game storage is limited unless you buy a microSD Express card, and the reported US price is now $499.99. If you mainly play your current Switch library on the go and value long sessions between charges, upgrading is harder to justify.

What changed with Switch 2?

Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025. Its core proposition remains hybrid play: use the console as a handheld or connect it to a TV, with detachable magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers. The larger 7.9-inch screen and higher display and output capabilities are the most visible hardware changes; Nintendo also lists mouse functionality for compatible games. Nintendo’s launch announcement introduced the system and its launch date.

Feature What Nintendo specifies What it means
Handheld screen 7.9 inches; 1080p output A larger, sharper handheld presentation than the original Switch’s basic display capability.
TV output Up to 4K at up to 60 fps 4K requires a compatible display and supported game; it is not a promise that every title renders at 4K.
HDR, VRR and frame rate HDR, VRR and up to 120 fps in supported games These capabilities depend on the game and display. TV-mode VRR was added in a system update released September 10, 2026.
Built-in storage 256 GB, with some capacity reserved for system use Some of the advertised capacity is unavailable for game and user data.

These are ceilings and compatibility-dependent features, not a guarantee of a particular resolution or frame rate in every game. See Nintendo’s current Switch 2 feature page for the stated conditions.

Is Switch 2 worth the current price?

Price changes the value calculation. Nintendo Life’s regional guide, updated September 2, 2026, reports a US price of $499.99 effective September 1, 2026, up from $449.99. Its guide also reports £419.99 in the UK and €499.99 in France, Germany and Spain after increases. These are reported regional guide figures, not a guarantee of the price at every retailer; check local listings before buying. Nintendo Life’s regional price guide gives the dated figures.

Nintendo’s Japanese launch announcement listed ¥49,980 for the Japanese-language model and ¥69,980 for the multi-language version sold through My Nintendo Store in Japan. Those are historical, Japan-specific launch prices, not a current US or global price comparison. At the higher reported US price, Switch 2 is easiest to recommend to someone who will use its exclusive games, improved display and TV options, or existing Switch library regularly. For an owner content with current games and hardware, the upgrade offers less value unless those improvements address a specific need.

How long does the Switch 2 battery last?

Nintendo Australia estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours per charge, depending on the game and usage conditions. Nintendo estimates about three hours to recharge while the console is asleep. These are manufacturer estimates, not a promised runtime for every game or a standardized independent test. Nintendo Australia’s technical specifications list the battery range and charging estimate.

The wide range matters most to handheld players: demanding games and usage conditions can move play time toward the shorter end, so frequent charging may be part of a long travel day. The battery is internal and non-removable; Nintendo says replacement is available for a fee through Customer Support. TechRadar’s June 30, 2025 review called handheld battery life a drawback. That is the publication’s launch-era assessment, not a controlled runtime result or a review of the 2026 game catalogue. Read TechRadar’s review.

Can you play original Switch games on Switch 2?

Switch 2 plays Nintendo Switch game cards as well as Switch 2 cards, and Nintendo says the new system supports existing Switch games subject to exceptions. Some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for the specific game before buying or transferring your library; compatibility should not be assumed for every title. Nintendo’s feature page and technical specifications describe the caveat.

That backward compatibility makes upgrading less like abandoning a library and more like moving to a newer console with a qualified bridge to older games. TechRadar praised the backward-compatibility experience in its June 2025 review, based on its own play. Its separate criticism that the launch software lineup was relatively slight describes launch conditions only; the Switch 2 catalogue has grown since then and that observation is not a current catalogue assessment.

Is 256 GB enough, and which memory cards work?

The console has 256 GB of internal storage, with some reserved for system use. For expanding Switch 2 game storage, Nintendo Australia specifies microSD Express cards only, up to 2 TB; an internet-connected system update is required to use one. A standard microSD card from the original Switch does not expand Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo says legacy microSD cards can still be used to copy screenshots and video from the original console. Check the card type before purchasing: “microSD” alone is not enough. Nintendo Australia’s specifications detail supported cards and the update requirement.

What about multiplayer, GameChat and controllers?

Joy-Con 2 controllers are included, and Nintendo lists mouse functionality in compatible games. For TV play, an optional Pro Controller is another controller choice, but it is not required to use the console. GameChat starts with the C Button and supports screen sharing. Video requires the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera or a compatible USB-C camera, sold separately.

Online features, including GameChat, require an internet connection, a Nintendo Account and a Nintendo Switch Online membership; availability and terms vary. The open-access offer described around launch ended March 31, 2026, so GameChat should not be treated as currently free. Nintendo lists the current requirements on its Switch 2 feature page.

Who should buy Switch 2—and who should wait?

It makes sense if

  • You want to play Switch 2 exclusives, including Mario Kart World, which Nintendo identified as a launch exclusive.
  • You value a larger 1080p handheld screen and the option for up to 4K TV output in supported games.
  • You own Switch games and want a newer console that plays many of them, after checking compatibility for titles that matter to you.
  • You mostly play near a charger or are comfortable with Nintendo’s estimated 2–6.5-hour battery range.

Consider keeping your original Switch if

  • Your current games meet your needs and you do not want to pay the reported current price for the newer hardware.
  • Long unplugged handheld sessions are a priority.
  • You already have standard microSD cards and expected them to add game storage; Switch 2 requires microSD Express for that purpose.

The decision is not simply “newer is better.” Switch 2 adds meaningful screen, TV and software options, while its battery estimate and storage-card requirement have direct costs for portable players. The strongest reason to upgrade is wanting the new system’s games and features; the strongest reason to wait is being satisfied with an original Switch and its library.
