Ansoft announced HFSS v11 in June 2007 as an updated release of its 3-D full-wave electromagnetic field simulation software. The launch focused on solving larger models more efficiently through higher-order hierarchical basis functions, an iterative solver and an updated finite-element meshing algorithm. Ansoft also claimed faster simulations with lower memory use, though the cited release coverage provides no independent benchmark protocol.
What was HFSS v11?
HFSS—short for High Frequency Structure Simulator—was Ansoft’s flagship 3-D electromagnetic field simulation product for high-frequency, RF and wireless design, according to the company’s 2006 Form 10-K. In June 2007, trade publications reported Ansoft’s release announcement for version 11: EE Times covered it on June 13, while Microwave Journal’s announcement was dated June 7.
The release was aimed at electromagnetic problems whose size or complexity made them difficult to solve with earlier workflows. Ansoft chairman and chief technology officer Zoltan Cendes said the new technology would let customers run “massive simulations of structures that were simply too large to solve previously.” That was a statement from a company executive in the launch coverage, not an independent assessment.
What changed in the v11 release?
Higher-order basis functions and an iterative solver
Ansoft highlighted higher-order hierarchical basis functions used with an iterative solver. The release announcement described this combination as a way to model fields accurately with smaller meshes and solve large, multi-wavelength structures more efficiently. In practical terms, the emphasis was not simply on adding more geometry to a model, but on improving how the software represented and solved the electromagnetic problem.

Updated finite-element meshing
The release also introduced a fault-tolerant, high-quality finite-element meshing algorithm. Other features listed in launch coverage included an enhanced port solver, Floquet ports, genetic-algorithm optimization, automatic terminal assignment, distributed solving for frequency and parametric sweeps, and interface and dynamic-link changes. These were features described in the release announcement, rather than independently tested capabilities.
How much faster did Ansoft say HFSS v11 was?
Ansoft said its updated meshing technology let HFSS simulate very complex models two to five times faster while using half the memory compared with previous versions. Those figures are the vendor’s reported comparison, as repeated in contemporaneous trade coverage; the sources do not provide an independent test, benchmark configuration or validation dataset. They should therefore be read as Ansoft’s launch claim, not as a guaranteed speedup for every model or user.
What was HFSS v11 used to simulate?
The launch coverage identified applications across high-frequency and high-speed design, including:
- RF and microwave components
- On-chip passive components
- Printed circuit board (PCB) interconnects
- Antennas
- Integrated-circuit (IC) packages
Ansoft also described links between HFSS, Nexxim—its frequency- and time-domain circuit simulator—and Ansoft Designer, a schematic and design-management front end. The proposed workflow combined nonlinear transistor-level circuits with 3-D full-wave component models.

Which operating systems were listed at launch?
Contemporaneous coverage listed the following launch-era platforms. This is a historical compatibility list, not guidance for installing or supporting HFSS today.
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Windows XP x64 Edition
- Windows Server
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux v3
- Solaris 8 and Solaris 9
What did HFSS v11.1 add?
HFSS v11.1 was a follow-on update reported in May 2008, not part of the June 2007 v11 launch. Electronic Design reported additions that included meshing and model-resolution or validation features, Nastran (.nas) geometry import, Parasolid and Unigraphics geometry import (the latter formats on Windows), and enhanced post-processing.

Ansoft’s HFSS product line continued under Ansys. Ansys currently presents HFSS as active 3-D high-frequency electromagnetic simulation software for applications including antennas, components, interconnects, connectors, ICs and PCBs. That current product page provides present-day context; its modern capabilities should not be attributed to the 2007 v11 release.
