Claude.ai supports image uploads, so a Figma screenshot that will not paste is usually a clipboard-handoff problem—not proof that Claude cannot work with the image. The dependable workaround is to copy the selected Figma frame as a PNG, or export it as a PNG and attach that file in Claude.

Why won’t Claude accept my Figma screenshot?

There is no single confirmed cause for every failed paste. Figma documents copying a selected object as a PNG for use in other applications, and Anthropic documents uploading images to Claude. Neither promises that every browser, desktop app, or operating-system clipboard handoff will work in every setup.

That distinction matters: Claude’s image support and the act of pasting an image from Figma are separate steps. If the image does not appear in the conversation, use Figma’s Copy as PNG command or export a file and attach it through Claude’s upload control.

How do I paste a Figma screenshot into Claude?

Option 1: Copy the selected frame as a PNG

  1. In Figma Design, select the frame or object containing the screen you want Claude to see.
  2. Right-click the selection and choose Copy as PNG.
  3. In the Claude conversation, paste the clipboard image. Confirm that it appears in the composer before sending.

Figma says Copy as PNG uses a 2× output by default. Select the frame or object that includes the relevant content; the documented command copies a selected object, not necessarily everything visible across the canvas. See Figma’s Copy and paste objects guidance.

Option 2: Export a PNG, then attach it

  1. Select the frame or layer you want to share in Figma.
  2. In the right sidebar’s Export section, add an export configuration and choose PNG.
  3. Export the selection. In Figma’s browser app, the file goes to the browser’s configured download location; in the desktop app, Figma prompts you for a file name and destination.
  4. In Claude, use the attachment control in the conversation composer to select and upload the downloaded PNG.

Figma notes that exporting depends on your access and whether the file owner has restricted copying and sharing. If the export controls are unavailable, check the file’s permissions rather than assuming Claude is the problem. For details, see Figma’s Export from Figma Design guide.

Which image format and size should I use?

Anthropic’s Claude.ai guidance lists JPEG, PNG, GIF, and WebP as supported image formats. Each image can be up to 30 MB and 8000 × 8000 pixels. Anthropic recommends avoiding small or low-resolution images and says 1000 × 1000 pixels or larger is a useful benchmark for image work; that is product guidance, not a guarantee of recognition accuracy. Check the actual exported file against those limits before trying more involved troubleshooting. See What kinds of images can I upload to Claude.ai?

For interface screens with small labels, use PNG where possible. Figma describes PNG compression as lossless and says it maintains original image quality and text readability. JPG is lossy, and compression can affect text clarity. JPG can be useful when a smaller file matters and some quality loss is acceptable, but it is a weaker choice for tiny UI copy. Figma explains the trade-offs in Export formats and settings for static designs.

How do I upload several Figma screens or a design document?

For multiple screens, a PDF can keep pages together instead of requiring separate image uploads. Anthropic specifically documents visual analysis of PDFs under 100 pages for Claude 4, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Sonnet when uploaded to chats or projects. This qualification does not establish visual PDF analysis for every Claude model or every PDF context. See What kinds of documents can I upload to Claude.ai?

What to check if the upload still fails

  • Did the image reach Claude? If paste produces no attachment, try Copy as PNG; if that still fails, export the PNG and attach the downloaded file.
  • Is the file supported and within limits? Check that it is JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP, no larger than 30 MB, and no more than 8000 × 8000 pixels under Anthropic’s cited Claude.ai guidance.
  • Can the details be read? Avoid shrinking a UI screen until labels are tiny. Export at adequate resolution; PNG is the better-supported choice for preserving text clarity.
  • Can you export from Figma? If the export option is missing or blocked, check your file access and owner restrictions.

Clipboard permissions, browser behavior, or an account-specific condition may be worth checking if the file route also fails, but the official guidance cited here does not identify any of them as the confirmed cause of this particular problem. Anthropic confirms image uploads in Can Claude produce images?; it does not promise universal clipboard-paste behavior.
