Is my Android phone too old to update? Age alone cannot tell you. Update eligibility depends on your exact phone model and its manufacturer’s support policy. Android warns that an older model might not be able to run the latest version, but there is no universal Android-wide age cutoff.
Check your Android version and security update date
Android version and Android security update level are separate details. The version tells you which Android release is installed; the security update level helps show how recently security patches were applied. A version number by itself does not tell you when the latest security patch arrived.
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone.
- Find Android version, Android security update, and Google Play system update. Labels may vary by phone.
Record the phone’s exact model name and the displayed security update date. Android’s official update guidance explains these update categories and how to check them.
Check whether an update is available
- Open Settings and look for System and Software update or a similarly named option. Menu names and paths differ among manufacturers.
- Check for available updates and follow the on-screen instructions if one appears.
- If no update appears, restart the phone and check again, as Android recommends.
- Look up the exact model on the manufacturer’s official support page and compare its stated support policy with the version and security date shown on your phone.
A missing update may mean the phone is no longer eligible, but update availability and rollout can also vary by device. The manufacturer’s model-specific information is the best way to distinguish those possibilities.

Why there is no single Android age limit
Android does not set one lifespan that applies to every phone. Manufacturers determine support for their models, and support periods can differ between models and brands. The official guidance does not establish a general number of years for which all Android phones receive updates.
Google Pixel is one example, not a rule for all Android phones
Google’s Pixel update policy lists seven years of OS and security updates for Pixel 8 and newer model groups. It lists five years for Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation phones and Pixel Fold. Those periods run from first availability on the Google Store in the US. Google lists Pixel 5a and earlier as no longer receiving Android version updates and security updates.

These are Google’s terms for the named Pixel groups. They should not be applied to Samsung, Motorola, other manufacturers, or different regional and carrier versions. Check the support policy for your exact phone.
If Android version updates have stopped
A phone can stop receiving a new Android version without that fact alone establishing whether security patches continue. Check the displayed Android security update level and the manufacturer’s stated security-support end date separately.

If the manufacturer confirms that security support has ended, weigh your app and feature needs, the phone’s condition, and the cost of replacement. That is a personal risk and usability decision, not an instruction that every unsupported phone must be replaced immediately.

- The manufacturer’s OS and security-support commitments for the exact model.
- When support starts and when it is scheduled to end.
- Whether the commitment applies to your region and carrier version.
- Whether the phone meets your app and feature requirements.
- The device’s condition and cost.
If you are considering a refurbished phone, verify the exact model’s remaining manufacturer support and the seller’s return and condition terms. Support policies, rollout details, and regional eligibility can change, so confirm them with the manufacturer when making your decision.
