NordVPN has the stronger result in the independent performance comparison reviewed here. Artifact Security’s June 2026 VPN Performance World Tour Round 1 gave NordVPN a score of 91 and Platinum, while ExpressVPN scored 84 and Gold. That is a clear winner for this published round—not proof that NordVPN is better for every person, location, device, or buying priority. The twelve items below are comparison dimensions, not twelve hands-on tests.

What the 2026 performance result does—and does not—show

Artifact Security’s Round 1 report tested five providers across 55 routes from five origin cities. Its stated checks included speed and consistency, time to connect, leak and kill-switch behavior, and feature verification; Artifact Security describes the methodology as aligned with AMTSO. The report gives NordVPN the only Platinum rating, at 91, and ExpressVPN a Gold rating, at 84. It also attributes the round’s fastest download result, 908 Mbps, and fastest upload result, 920 Mbps, to NordVPN. Those are results from that test round, not speeds a subscriber should expect on a home connection.

The report’s routes, origins, devices, and methods define the boundary of the comparison. It does not establish how either service performs on every server, operating system, network, or route. Its lowest-latency result, 183 ms, belongs to ProtonVPN—not either service in this comparison. Artifact Security also says NordVPN won three of five regions; that regional result helps explain the overall award, but does not make every individual route a NordVPN win.

ExpressVPN vs NordVPN: 12 comparison points

This checklist separates measured results from provider statements and evidence that does not establish a head-to-head winner. Where the available sources do not establish a comparable result, the table says so rather than filling the gap with a guess.

Comparison dimension What the available evidence says
1. Independent performance Artifact Security’s June 2026 Round 1: NordVPN 91, Platinum; ExpressVPN 84, Gold. NordVPN also recorded the round’s fastest download and upload results. This is the report’s result, not a universal ranking.
2. Stability and connection time Artifact Security says it assessed speed consistency and connection time as part of its round. The supplied report summary does not give a separate ExpressVPN-versus-NordVPN connection-time figure or a standalone stability winner.
3. Leak and kill-switch checks Artifact Security says leak and kill-switch behavior were checked. The supplied summary does not give service-specific pass/fail details, so it does not support a separate winner on these checks.
4. Protocols RTINGS’ July 2026 comparison identifies ExpressVPN’s Lightway and NordVPN’s NordLynx as proprietary protocols. That identifies the options, but does not by itself show which protocol is safer or faster for a particular user.
5. Audits ExpressVPN’s Trust Center lists audit reports with dates and scope, including KPMG’s June 2025 audit of its privacy commitments and reviews of Lightway. An audit is evidence about its stated subject and scope; an audit count is not a comparable overall safety score. The available material does not establish a like-for-like audit ranking against NordVPN.
6. Server and location availability ExpressVPN announced 214 app-selectable locations in 113 countries on July 7, 2026. That is ExpressVPN’s own network figure, not an independently audited head-to-head count. A comparable NordVPN figure is not stated in the available sources.
7. Operating systems and simultaneous devices RTINGS’ July 2026 comparison reports a maximum of 10 connected devices for NordVPN and 8 for ExpressVPN. ExpressVPN’s pricing page, however, lists 10, 12, and 14 simultaneous devices for Basic, Advanced, and Pro. Treat the allowance as plan- and source-dependent, and check the current terms for the exact tier you would buy. A comparable operating-system inventory is not stated here.
8. Routers, TVs, and consoles NordVPN documents VPN-compatible or preconfigured router setups for devices without VPN apps. ExpressVPN offers router support and its Aircove hardware. These are alternative ways to cover devices that cannot run a VPN app directly; the available evidence does not establish a universal device-compatibility winner.
9. Streaming Provider materials make streaming-related feature claims, but the reviewed evidence is not a controlled head-to-head test of named streaming services. It cannot establish which service works more reliably with a particular catalog or platform.
10. Privacy and transparency ExpressVPN describes RAM-only TrustedServer, private DNS, AES-256, a kill switch, leak protections, and automatic obfuscation on supported platforms. These are provider-described features, not all independently verified by the performance round. The available information does not support an overall privacy-policy ranking between the two services.
11. Plan features ExpressVPN’s U.S. pricing page presents Basic, Advanced, and Pro plans with different device allowances. The reviewed information does not provide a sufficiently complete, equivalent feature comparison with NordVPN’s current tiers to name a plan-feature winner.
12. First-term and renewal cost ExpressVPN’s captured U.S. offer lists introductory totals and annual renewal prices, detailed below. A current NordVPN price was not verified in the reviewed material, so there is no supported numeric price winner.

Security features and audits need a scope-by-scope comparison

ExpressVPN describes Lightway as its proprietary protocol and says its TrustedServer infrastructure runs on volatile memory. It also lists AES-256 encryption, private DNS, a kill switch, leak protections, and automatic obfuscation on supported platforms. These are useful product specifications to check against your needs, but a provider’s feature description is not the same thing as an independent finding that every feature works identically across platforms or circumstances.

For audit evidence, look at who examined what and when. ExpressVPN’s Trust Center lists KPMG’s June 2025 audit of privacy commitments as well as Lightway reviews. Those are different audit subjects; neither a report count nor the existence of an audit alone proves that one service is safer overall. The available sources do not provide a like-for-like audit comparison that would justify declaring a security winner.

Plans, device limits, and the bill after the introductory term

At the time its page was captured in 2026, ExpressVPN’s U.S. pricing page displayed the following offers in U.S. dollars. Each introductory total covered 28 months, including four extra months shown with the two-year plan; the renewal price was annual. These are page-specific offers, not guaranteed quotations: promotions, taxes, availability, and terms can vary, so verify checkout before paying.

ExpressVPN plan Displayed monthly equivalent First 28 months Annual renewal Listed simultaneous devices
Basic $2.99/month $83.72 $99.95/year 10
Advanced $4.49/month $125.72 $119.95/year 12
Pro $7.49/month $209.72 $199.95/year 14

The difference between RTINGS’ July 2026 comparison of eight ExpressVPN devices and the newer tiered pricing page’s 10, 12, or 14 is a reason not to assume one timeless brand-wide allowance. Check the current plan terms. ExpressVPN’s page also lists a 30-day period for new users; its product FAQ notes app-store purchase exceptions, so confirm the applicable refund terms for your purchase channel. No current NordVPN price was verified here; compare equivalent tiers and renewal terms directly rather than judging by one provider’s introductory monthly equivalent.

When a router matters—and when it does not

A VPN-compatible router can cover devices that lack a VPN app, such as some connected TVs, consoles, or smart-home devices. NordVPN explains compatible and preconfigured router setups, while ExpressVPN offers router support and Aircove hardware. A router is an optional setup path, not a requirement for using either service: most supported phones and computers can connect through their apps. Before buying hardware, verify its model, firmware, and compatibility with the VPN service and the devices you want to cover.

Which service should you choose?

  • Choose NordVPN if measured performance is your main deciding factor. It led the June 2026 Artifact Security round on overall score and recorded that round’s highest download and upload results. If performance on your own connection matters, use any trial or refund period available to check your location, device, and typical routes.
  • Consider ExpressVPN if its plan options or documented features better match your setup. Its U.S. page lists tiered simultaneous-device allowances, and it describes Lightway, TrustedServer, and router options. Confirm the precise features and terms attached to the plan and platform you would use.
  • For streaming, privacy, or the lowest long-term cost, decide from evidence specific to that question. The available material does not establish a controlled streaming winner, a like-for-like overall privacy winner, or a numeric price winner between the services. Check the service, audit scope, and renewal terms relevant to your decision.

Artifact Security is the source for the comparative performance verdict; RTINGS and the providers’ own materials add useful context on protocols, device allowances, network claims, plan terms, audits, and routers. Those sources answer different questions, so the performance award should not be mistaken for a verdict on every feature or every buyer’s priorities.
