First check whether the problem affects one device or every device. If other devices still work, focus on the affected device’s Wi-Fi settings or software. If several devices fail together—or they connect to Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet—look at the router, modem, or internet provider. The distinction matters: Wi-Fi connects your device to the local router; internet access depends on the connection beyond it, too.
Find out what has stopped working
Note what you see before changing settings: is the Wi-Fi network missing, does one device fail to join, do devices keep disconnecting, or do they connect but show “no internet”? Then test a second device on the same network. Google and Microsoft both recommend checking whether other devices can connect; the result helps separate a single-device problem from one affecting the shared network.
- Only one device has trouble: Start with that device’s Wi-Fi switch, airplane mode, selected network, saved password, adapter, and software.
- Several devices fail at once: Check the router and modem, their power and cables, and whether the internet provider reports an outage.
- Devices connect to Wi-Fi but have no internet: They may still be communicating with the router even though the modem or provider connection is down.
- It works near the router but not elsewhere: Distance, walls, placement, interference, or household network demand may be involved.
Check the affected device
Verify the basic Wi-Fi settings
- Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and airplane mode is off.
- Choose the network name you expect to use. If you have more than one router or network, check that the device has not joined a different one.
- Enter the current password carefully. If the Wi-Fi name, password, or provider changed, some devices may need to reconnect or be set up again. Google notes that a Nest or Home device may need setup again after such a change.
If the device runs Windows 10 or 11
Microsoft Support recommends forgetting the saved network and reconnecting if Windows is having trouble joining it. Follow Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide for the current steps and later diagnostics, including the network troubleshooter and adapter or driver checks. These Windows instructions do not describe the menus on phones or Macs; use the device maker’s guidance for those systems.
Windows’ network reset is a later measure, not the first one to try. Microsoft says it removes and reinstalls network adapters and resets their settings. VPN clients or virtual switches may need to be set up again afterward.

Restart the modem or router carefully
Check that equipment has power and that its cables are seated correctly. A restart can help, but the correct procedure and status lights depend on the equipment. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, especially if you have a combined modem-router, battery backup, or mesh setup; do not assume one timing or light pattern applies to every model.
For a modem restart, Google’s specific instructions are to unplug power and Ethernet, wait 2–3 minutes until the modem is fully off, reconnect it, and wait for the internet light to become solid. That interval is Google’s procedure, not a universal rule for every modem or router. If the connection still does not return, Google advises contacting the internet provider. See Google’s modem restart instructions.

Test whether signal or interference is involved
Compare locations
Move the affected device close to the router and test in an open location. If the connection improves there, distance or physical barriers may be weakening the signal. Google identifies walls and other obstructions, distance, nearby wireless traffic, microwaves, baby monitors, and household bandwidth use as possible contributors to slow or unstable performance. Try changing the router’s placement before buying a replacement or adding equipment.
Compare Wi-Fi bands, if available
If your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks and your device supports both, try connecting to the other band. Google notes that 2.4 GHz may not achieve the same speeds as 5 GHz. That does not mean either band will always be more reliable: results depend on the device and the conditions in your home. Microsoft also includes testing another frequency band among its Windows troubleshooting steps.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Check for overlapping router networks
Two nearby routers using the same Wi-Fi name can cause devices to switch between networks or fail to connect, according to Google. This can happen when a provider router remains active after you add another router or mesh system. Check which network the device actually joined and consult the equipment makers’ setup guidance. Do not disable Wi-Fi on a provider router unless the instructions for your specific setup call for it; changing that setting can affect the rest of the home network.
Separate a router problem from an internet-provider problem
On a Windows computer, Microsoft describes pinging the default gateway as a way to check the connection between the computer and the Wi-Fi router. If that connection succeeds, the fault may lie farther upstream, such as at the modem or with the provider. This is an optional Windows diagnostic; you do not need to use it to start troubleshooting.

If your equipment and computer support it, a temporary Ethernet connection can provide another comparison. Microsoft suggests connecting a computer directly to a modem by Ethernet where possible: if internet access works that way while Wi-Fi does not, the router is implicated. Not every setup supports a direct modem connection, so skip this test if your hardware or provider setup does not allow it. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi connection guide for its gateway and Ethernet checks.

- One device still cannot connect while others work: Continue with that device’s operating-system diagnostics or contact its manufacturer. On Windows, use Microsoft’s adapter, driver, and troubleshooting steps before considering a network reset.
- All devices fail after equipment has restarted: Check your provider’s outage information and contact the ISP about an outage or recurring service problem. Google lists modem and ISP issues among possible causes of poor or lost connectivity.
- A wired connection works but Wi-Fi does not: Investigate the router or wireless coverage rather than treating the issue as a confirmed provider outage.
- Only distant rooms have unreliable Wi-Fi: Test placement and obstacles first. A router replacement or mesh system may be worth considering only after the evidence points to coverage or router equipment.
For a broader list of possible causes—including distance, barriers, bandwidth use, modem or ISP issues, and nearby-router interference—see Google’s guidance on slow internet with Google Nest Wifi or Google Wifi.
