There is no evidence-based universal winner among advanced aftermarket keyless-entry systems. The right choice depends on your vehicle and on what the system actually protects: hands-free entry, engine starting, or both. For relay-theft resistance, look for a documented proximity check such as secure UWB ranging, then verify that the specific vehicle implementation and installation are supported. For many owners, a periodically checked signal-blocking key pouch and a rated physical lock are useful additional layers.

What counts as an advanced anti-theft keyless system?

The phrase can describe several different functions, and a system that unlocks doors is not necessarily one that prevents the engine from starting. Remote keyless entry (RKE) uses a button on the fob to lock or unlock. Passive entry/passive start (PEPS) detects an authorized nearby key or credential for hands-free access and, where supported, starting. A digital key uses a phone as a credential; its features and security depend on the vehicle and implementation.

An immobilizer is a separate start-authorization layer: it prevents the vehicle from starting without the authorized key or process. An alarm that sounds after an intrusion is not the same as an immobilizer, and neither is simply adding hands-free door access.

Capability What it does What to verify
Remote keyless entry Locks or unlocks when the driver presses a fob button. Whether the system adds only door control or also affects starting.
Passive entry/passive start Recognizes an authorized nearby key or credential for hands-free access and, in supported systems, starting. How proximity is determined and what happens if the credential battery fails.
Digital key Uses a phone-based credential for access and potentially starting. Which functions the vehicle supports and what authorized backup is available.
Immobilizer Requires an authorized key or activation process before the vehicle can start. Whether it is included, vehicle-compatible, and approved for the vehicle.

How relay theft works—and what can prevent it

Police.uk defines keyless relay theft as “when a device is used to fool the car into thinking the key is close by.” In a relay attack, equipment forwards communication between the car and a key that is actually farther away. The vehicle can then act as though its passive key is nearby.

  • Replaces 2101L, includes control module
  • Remote keyless entry, ignition controller door locks
  • Flashing parking lights, panic (car locator)

Encryption and rolling codes help protect against other attacks, but their presence alone does not establish relay resistance: a relay can forward live communication without cracking the cryptography. A stronger signal of a proximity defense is documented secure ranging. Ultra-wideband (UWB) systems can use time-of-flight measurement to estimate whether a credential is physically close. Bosch describes UWB time-of-flight measurement with encrypted communication as a relay countermeasure; Microchip’s 2023 car-access reference-system guide describes AES-128 authentication and a UWB distance-measurement feature. These technology descriptions do not independently validate every product that uses UWB or claims anti-relay protection.

Ask what the product measures, how the vehicle uses that measurement, and whether there is independent, product-specific evidence. A label such as “anti-relay” or “encrypted” is not by itself proof of a tested defense.

How to compare systems for your vehicle

  1. Confirm exact fitment. Check make, model, year, trim, market, and wiring architecture with the manufacturer or a qualified installer. Confirm whether factory key functions remain intact; a universal-looking kit is not evidence of vehicle compatibility.
  2. Identify what it protects. Establish whether the system provides entry convenience, an alarm, an immobilizer, or a combination. If preventing unauthorized starting is a priority, verify that start authorization is actually part of the system.
  3. Examine credential security. Look for mutual authentication and cryptographic protection, plus an explanation of replay or code-capture protection. Treat these as parts of the design, not as proof of relay resistance.
  4. Ask for relay-defense specifics. Prefer documented secure ranging or another tested proximity defense. Request evidence for the exact product and vehicle implementation, not a general claim about a technology.
  5. Plan for failures and backups. Find out how authorized entry and starting work when a fob or phone battery is dead, connectivity is lost, or the system faults. Confirm there is a safe, authorized fallback before installation.
  6. Check installation and ongoing support. Ask whether the installer is qualified, whether the vehicle manufacturer approves the upgrade, and what warranty, service support, and compatibility updates are available.

Product and protection options: what the evidence supports

The available information does not establish a current, independently tested ranking of aftermarket systems. These options serve different purposes, so compare them by function rather than treating them as interchangeable products.

Option What is described Important limit
Advanced Keys AK-104S The manufacturer describes a standalone smart-entry system with RFID, rolling-code encryption, and an ignition relay disabled after an unauthorized entry or vehicle-activation attempt. Those are manufacturer claims, not independently validated performance findings. The product information is old; check current availability, specifications, fitment, and installation support before considering it.
Signal-blocking key pouch A screened pouch can help prevent a key signal from being relayed while the key is stored inside it. Police.uk recommends using one and checking it every few months. Effectiveness depends on the individual pouch continuing to block the signal. Check it periodically rather than assuming it remains effective.
Steering-wheel lock A visible physical barrier can add protection distinct from electronic access controls. Police.uk points to security-rated products; Hertfordshire Constabulary advises an approved, strong full-cover steering-wheel lock. Check the rating or approval for the exact model and market. Physical security does not authenticate a key or replace an immobilizer.
Aftermarket immobilizer Requires the correct fob, key, or activation process to authorize starting. Police.uk advises discussing a vehicle-manufacturer-approved immobilizer with a dealer. Verify approval and compatibility for the specific vehicle before purchase and installation.

How to reduce risk with a keyless car you already own

  • Keep the main key and spare away from the vehicle when stored.
  • Store keyless keys in a screened signal-blocking pouch and check periodically that each pouch still works.
  • After buying a used car, have its keys reprogrammed so that keys held by a previous owner are no longer authorized.
  • Ask a dealer about a manufacturer-approved aftermarket immobilizer if you want an additional start-authorization layer.
  • Consider a security-rated physical lock as a separate visible barrier, checking the rating or approval for the actual model and market.

These measures address different parts of the risk: a pouch limits the key signal while stored, an immobilizer controls authorization to start, and a physical lock creates a mechanical obstacle. None should be treated as a guarantee against theft.

What you can—and cannot—conclude from theft figures

Hertfordshire Constabulary reported that vehicle thefts in its county rose by more than 11% in 2024 compared with 2023, with larger rises in some named districts. That is a local police-force figure; it is not a national rate and does not show that any particular keyless system works. No broadly applicable current comparative statistic establishes the effectiveness of advanced aftermarket keyless-entry systems.
