Then label the result correctly: a manufacturer’s committed-through estimate, a regulatory minimum, or the date of an update that has already been released. Those are different kinds of dates, and a phone’s announcement, retail launch, end-of-market placement and purchase date are not interchangeable.
What date does a phone update promise count from?
Use the policy’s own starting event, not the date that seems most convenient. For example, Google says its Pixel support periods run from when each model first became available on the Google Store in the US. The EU’s covered-device rule uses a different event: the date the model ceases to be placed on the market. A buyer’s purchase date is not the anchor in either example.
That distinction matters because adding the same number of years to different starting dates produces different end dates. Do not substitute an announcement date, a general retail launch date or a policy publication date unless the policy or a reliable source establishes that it is the relevant anchor.
How to calculate a support date
- Identify the exact phone. Record the model and generation, and confirm the policy applies to that model and the region in question.
- Separate update categories. Note whether the term covers operating-system upgrades, security updates, corrective updates, functionality updates, or some combination.
- Find the policy’s anchor event. Use the date for that event, not the date the owner bought the device. Google’s Pixel policy, for instance, uses first availability on Google Store in the US.
- Add the stated duration. Use calendar arithmetic, but do not invent a precise final day if the anchor is only known to the month or year, or if the policy does not define day-level counting.
- Describe what the result means. Call it a manufacturer commitment, a statutory minimum, or an observed release date. Do not present one as another.
- Keep a dated source. Policies and release archives can change, so note the source and when you checked it.
What Google’s Pixel policy says
Google’s current Pixel support schedule distinguishes model cohorts and says its terms cover both OS and security updates. Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of updates from first availability on Google Store in the US. The listed Pixel 6- and Pixel 7-era models and Pixel Fold receive five years from that same anchor. These are Google’s stated commitments for the named models, not a universal rule for every Pixel or Android phone. Check the Google Pixel support schedule for the exact model list and current details.

To turn a particular commitment into a calendar estimate, you need the model’s first-availability date at the precision supported by the source. If you only know the year, report the result as a year-level estimate rather than claiming an exact last day. The owner’s purchase date does not restart Google’s stated period.
How the EU minimum differs
Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 requires qualifying updates for covered devices to remain available at no cost for at least five years from the date the model ceases to be placed on the market. That is a statutory minimum with a later lifecycle anchor—not automatically five years from the phone’s retail launch, announcement or an individual purchase. The rule is scope-bound; it should not be generalized to every phone in every market. See the consolidated EU regulation.

The regulation also sets timing intervals after specified upstream releases: covered security or corrective updates must be available no later than four months afterward, and functionality updates no later than six months afterward. These are update-availability intervals, not the overall support period. The five-year minimum and the four- and six-month timing rules answer different questions.
How to compare policies without mixing unlike claims
Before comparing two phone-support claims, line up the same facts. A brand-wide headline may apply only to eligible products or named generations, and a commitment to security patches does not automatically promise OS upgrades. Samsung’s February 2022 announcement, for example, described four generations of OS upgrades for eligible products; it is a historical policy statement, not confirmation of the terms for every later Galaxy model. Verify a current model against its manufacturer’s current support page.

Why an update already released is not a support promise
A release archive establishes that a particular update reached the devices listed on a particular date; it does not establish how long every model will receive future updates. Apple’s security releases archive lists iOS 15.8.8 for iPhone 6s, iPhone 7 and first-generation iPhone SE on May 11, 2026. That is an observed release date, not a forward-looking support term for those phones or other iPhones. Check the Apple security releases archive for dated release records.

On a Pixel, Google says you can check the Android version and security update level in Settings, and check for an update there. Menu wording can vary by Android version; follow the device’s update controls and consult the manufacturer’s current support page for the model-specific commitment. The installed security level tells you what is on the phone now, not by itself how long future updates are promised.
