For a premium option, a July 2026 comparison names the Samsung 990 PRO With Heatsink its overall pick; it selects the Kingston FURY Renegade With Heatsink for value and the WD_BLACK SN850P for officially licensed positioning and an 8TB option. Those are specification- and price-based recommendations, not claims of comparative hands-on testing. Check the exact heatsink model and current local price before buying.
What an internal PS5 SSD needs to meet
Sony supports PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSDs. M.2 SATA SSDs are not supported. Sony lists a capacity range of 250GB to 8TB and recommends sequential read speed of at least 5,500MB/s. That speed is a recommendation, not a promise that every compatible drive will perform like the console’s internal storage.
The complete SSD and cooling assembly must fit inside the console’s M.2 bay. Sony supports lengths of 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, or 110mm, up to 25mm wide and 11.25mm thick. Effective heat dissipation is required. Check the dimensions of the exact heatsink-equipped SKU, not just the bare SSD: an aftermarket cooler can make an otherwise suitable drive too large. See Sony’s M.2 SSD support and installation requirements.
Sony also cautions that meeting its specifications does not guarantee that every third-party product will work or match the console’s internal SSD performance. Even an M.2 drive exceeding 5,500MB/s will not necessarily load every game faster.

Recommended internal SSDs for PS5
The following choices appear in a comparison that checked specifications and prices on July 15, 2026. Its rankings are not based on claimed hands-on testing. Prices and stock change, so use the recommendations as a shortlist and compare the same capacity and exact heatsink SKU in your market.
| Drive | Why consider it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung 990 PRO With Heatsink | The comparison’s overall pick; listed in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. | Compare local pricing and confirm the heatsink-equipped SKU and full assembly dimensions. |
| Kingston FURY Renegade With Heatsink | The comparison’s value choice; listed in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB heatsink options. | Value depends on current local price and capacity. Attribute any performance figures to Kingston; they are manufacturer specifications, not independent PS5 test results. |
| WD_BLACK SN850P | The comparison’s officially licensed option, including an 8TB choice. | Consider it for licensing or maximum capacity, not on the assumption it must outperform competing drives. |
| Crucial T500 With Heatsink; Lexar NM790 With Heatsink; Seagate Game Drive PS5 NVMe SSD | Other options in the same comparison. | Compare the exact capacity, heatsink model, fit, warranty, endurance rating, and local price. |
The comparison’s picks and listed capacities come from its July 2026 roundup: PS5.media’s best SSD for PS5 guide. A separate TechRadar PS5 SSD roundup also covers the Samsung 990 PRO and describes its own testing; those results should not be mistaken for tests by another publisher.

How to choose the right capacity and model
Choose capacity for your library and budget
Use the supported 250GB–8TB range as the compatibility boundary, then choose a capacity that suits how many games you want installed. The named comparison lists 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB versions for the Samsung and Kingston picks, and an 8TB WD_BLACK SN850P option. Compare like-for-like capacities: a cheaper price for a smaller drive is not a direct value comparison.
Prioritize fit, cooling, and total value
Once a drive meets Sony’s interface, speed recommendation, and physical requirements, treat higher advertised sequential-read speeds as secondary to price, warranty, endurance rating, and fit. Compare the full drive-plus-heatsink dimensions and the precise product SKU. Warranty duration and endurance limits vary by model and capacity; check the manufacturer’s terms for the exact version you plan to buy.

Understand what the storage can do
A compatible M.2 SSD can store, download, update, and play PS5 games. USB extended storage can hold PS5 games for archiving, but you must move a game back to console storage or the M.2 SSD to play it. Sony explains the distinction on its M.2 SSD support page.
