Harley-Davidson engines do not universally need exhaust restriction to make torque. The familiar phrase “back pressure” often confuses static resistance with the movement of exhaust pulses: pipe diameter, length and layout affect pulse velocity and pressure-wave timing, which can change scavenging and the RPM range where an engine delivers useful torque and power. Choose an exhaust for the whole engine setup and intended riding range, then follow the calibration guidance for that combination.
What riders mean by “back pressure”
In exhaust conversations, “back pressure” is often used as shorthand for a perceived low-speed torque tradeoff. But restriction is not itself the goal. Exhaust gases move in pulses, and the pressure waves those pulses create can help or hinder the clearing of exhaust from the cylinder—a process called scavenging. Tube diameter, length and system layout influence that behavior and need to suit the engine and the RPM range it is expected to use. EngineLabs’ explanation of exhaust scavenging discusses this engineering principle; it is not a Harley-Davidson factory document or a controlled Harley-specific study.
That distinction matters when comparing a baffled muffler with a more open exhaust. A change in pipe design may alter pulse behavior, reversion and the engine’s response in different parts of the rev range. It does not establish that every freer-flowing system improves every Harley, or that adding restriction is always the answer.
Why an exhaust can trade low-speed response for high-RPM power
Exhaust design is a compromise across the complete engine combination: displacement, intake, cam profile, exhaust-port design, pipe diameter and length, and the RPM range that matters to the rider. In general, a smaller diameter can favor gas velocity and lower-to-midrange response, while a larger diameter may support flow at higher RPM in some configurations. Neither tendency guarantees a particular result on a specific motorcycle.

- 【Premium Material】Built with a solid pipe structure to support use under common riding vibration and exhaust heat conditions. The silver surface finish helps add visual detail to the exhaust area, while the long drag pipe layout helps create a classic custom motorcycle appearance.
- 【Feature】The straight pipe layout helps support steady exhaust flow and a more direct exhaust tone during riding. The flange components help support stable exhaust pipe connection, making this exhaust kit suitable for replacing worn, rusted, or damaged exhaust pipes.
Harley-Davidson’s Screamin’ Eagle Path to Performance guidance illustrates the role of intended use when choosing components: it distinguishes a torque cam for low-to-mid RPM cruising response from a power cam for high-RPM, wide-open-throttle response. That is one part of the larger setup, not a claim that a cam or exhaust choice works the same way on every model. Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Path to Performance
What the Harley-specific example does—and does not—show
Daytona Twin Tec reports a dyno comparison on a 2003 Fat Boy with a 95-cubic-inch engine. In that specific setup, washers near the pipe ends produced more than 10 ft-lb additional torque at 3,500 RPM, while open-pipe-equivalent mufflers produced almost 7 horsepower at 5,800 RPM. The vendor’s FAQ does not state a publication year for the results. This is a configuration-specific, vendor-reported test—not an independent study or a result that can be generalized to other Harleys. Daytona Twin Tec technical FAQ

The useful lesson is not that washers or open pipes are universally better. The reported difference across RPM points shows why an exhaust choice has to be judged against the engine combination and the riding range the owner values.
How to choose an exhaust for your Harley

- Fitment: Confirm the exact model and year compatibility.
- Engine combination: Account for displacement, cam and intake configuration, rather than judging the exhaust in isolation.
- Priority RPM range: Decide whether low-to-midrange cruising response or higher-RPM power matters more for your use.
- Pipe design: Compare length, diameter and layout as a system, not just whether it is labeled “open” or “baffled.”
- Sound and compliance: Consider sound level and the emissions and noise rules that apply where the motorcycle will be used.
- Calibration: Check the exhaust manufacturer’s instructions and the motorcycle-specific guidance for required ECM tuning.
There is no universal “best” exhaust established by the sources here. The right choice depends on fitment, the rest of the engine setup and the desired operating range.

Harley-Davidson presents Stage I as “Intake + Exhaust + Tuning” and says: “When upgrading your intake and exhaust, you must recalibrate your Engine Control Module (ECM), also known as tuning.” That is Harley-Davidson’s guidance on its Screamin’ Eagle Path to Performance page, not a substitute for the instructions that apply to a particular motorcycle and parts combination. Installation instructions can be kit-specific. For example, Harley-Davidson’s service document for a particular performance exhaust kit says performance depends on proper ECM calibration, warns that the specified kit may perform poorly without recalibration, and requires the motorcycle’s service manual. Those directions should not be treated as universal instructions for every Harley exhaust or model. Harley-Davidson service instructions for the specified performance exhaust kit
Use the service manual and installation and tuning guidance for your exact motorcycle and parts. If fitment or calibration requirements are unclear, get model-specific advice before riding with the modified setup.
