A useful privacy contract should tell people which event is measured, what data is processed, who receives it, why, how long it is kept, and what choices they have. These are practical transparency recommendations, not a universal legal checklist.
What can happen before you click an email?
Some email features retrieve remote content in the background. That request can occur without a person deliberately opening or interacting with the message, so an image fetch or preview-related event should not automatically be treated as proof that a recipient read an email.
Apple Mail Privacy Protection changes remote-content fetching
Apple says that, when Protect Mail Activity is enabled, Mail downloads remote content in the background by default, regardless of engagement, and routes it through two relays so that no single relay has both the recipient’s IP address and the third-party Mail content. Apple describes the aim this way: “Protect Mail Activity helps protect your privacy by preventing email senders, including Apple, from learning information about your Mail activity.” Apple Support also states: “Mail Privacy Protection does not extend to links or email attachments such as PDF or other files.” This is a feature of Apple Mail, not a guarantee that link activity is hidden in every email client.
Gmail image proxying is about images
Google Workspace documents a separate image-handling mechanism: “When your users open email messages, Gmail uses Google’s secure proxy servers to serve images that might be included in these messages.” Google says this helps protect users from image-based security vulnerabilities. Workspace administrators can configure URL patterns to bypass the proxy, but Google warns that bypassing the protection can expose users and domains to security risks and does not recommend disabling the image proxy. Google Workspace Help describes image proxying; it does not establish that Gmail proxies every link a recipient clicks.

How is a link click different from an image preview?
A remote image request retrieves image content. A link check happens when a person follows a link, and may involve examining the URL and the request. They are different flows, with different purposes and data; evidence about image proxying does not establish what happens to a clicked link.
Google describes link protection for official Gmail clients and says it is testing similar protections for some users of third-party IMAP clients, including Apple Mail, Outlook, and some Android clients. For the described feature, Google lists request IP address, user agent, and information about clicked URLs among the data logged to run and maintain the service. It says this information is retained for “a short period” and used for security purposes, without specifying a duration on the cited page. The third-party-client coverage is described as a test, so availability may change. Google’s Gmail link-protection documentation does not make a link scan equivalent to a sender tracking an email open.

Can email preview links track me?
They can expose data, but what is exposed depends on the mechanism. A remote-content request may contact an image host or intermediary; a clicked link can carry identifying information in its URL and cause a destination or security service to process request details. The available documentation does not support the blanket claim that every preview reveals a recipient’s identity—or that privacy protections for images also protect later link visits.
A 2018 FTC PrivacyCon paper, I never signed up for this! Privacy implications of email tracking, found that 11% of links in its dataset contained embedded content requests that leaked an email address to a third party, and at least 35% of senders included at least one such link in one email. These are findings from that paper’s dataset and methods, not a current prevalence estimate for all email. The paper also discusses provider defenses such as proxying remote resources. What should a privacy contract say?
A sender or service handling preview and link data can use a short disclosure or agreement to make the data flow understandable. The points below are practical recommendations based on the documented behaviors; they are not presented as statutory requirements. Applicable legal duties depend on jurisdiction and need separate legal analysis.
Name the event being measured
Distinguish background image retrieval, preview generation, an inferred message open, a security scan, and a deliberate click. Avoid reporting a background fetch as though it proves a person read the message.

Describe the data involved
Say whether processing involves the URL and its query parameters, request time, IP address, user agent, identifiers embedded in a link, or a recipient or campaign association. Attribute particular fields to a named service only when that service documents them; the listed fields are not a claim that every provider collects all of them.
Identify who receives the data and why
Name relevant parties—such as the sender, email service, security provider, analytics vendor, or destination site—when they actually receive the information. Explain whether each use is for delivery, security scanning, analytics, attribution, or personalization instead of grouping everything under a vague phrase such as “improving the service.”

Give a concrete retention period where it is known. For the Gmail link-protection logging described by Google, the page says only “a short period”; it does not give a number. Explain any available opt-out or reduced-tracking setting, and how a recipient can go directly to a known site, without promising controls that the product does not provide.
Explain what a privacy feature does not cover
For Apple Mail Privacy Protection, distinguish its remote-content protection from later link activity and attachments. Apple explicitly says its feature does not extend to links or email attachments. A privacy contract should not imply otherwise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can recipients do with a suspicious link?
Privacy disclosures help explain data flows, but they do not establish that a link is safe. Google advises users to check that the address and sender name match, inspect whether a link’s destination matches its description, and avoid entering private information after following a suspicious email link. When uncertain, go directly to a site address you already know rather than relying on the email’s link. Google’s guidance on identifying and reporting phishing covers these user-side checks.
