No appliance category is automatically worth an extended warranty. Consider a paid plan only when its specific coverage and service are worth more to you than the full price and fees, after accounting for the manufacturer’s warranty, likely repair costs, and replacement options. The deciding factors are the appliance, the contract, and your ability to handle an unexpected bill—not the label “extended warranty.”
How to decide whether a plan is worth it
- Check what you already have. Read the manufacturer’s warranty and identify any other protection you already hold. A paid plan adds less value when it overlaps existing coverage. The FTC notes that service contracts may duplicate included coverage or cover only part of a product: FTC guidance on warranties and service contracts.
- Read the full contract. Note the total price and term, whether parts and labor are covered, deductibles or per-visit fees, exclusions, claim caps, shipping or transfer fees, replacement terms, who handles repairs, and which provider is responsible for claims.
- Look for relevant repair evidence. Use current reliability information for the appliance type and, when available, the model or brand. Treat survey rankings and service records as evidence about their samples—not as a guarantee about your appliance.
- Compare the plan with repair and replacement costs. A plan may be poor value if covered repairs are unlikely or inexpensive. It may still appeal if predictable costs matter to you or a large repair bill would be difficult to absorb, even when the expected cash return is uncertain.
- Check whether service is usable where you live. A plan is less useful if its repair network does not serve your area, appointments are impractical, or exclusions and caps leave much of the bill to you.
The FTC’s guidance is direct: “An extended warranty or service contract might not be worth the cost if a product isn’t likely to need repairs.” It also recommends checking the price, deductibles and service fees, shipping or transfer charges, reimbursement limits, duration, and provider reputation. See FTC guidance on extended warranties and service contracts.
Are some appliance types better candidates?
The available evidence does not establish a universal winner among refrigerators, laundry machines, dishwashers, or cooking appliances. Repair likelihood and cost vary by category, model, brand, and location, while service-contract terms vary by provider. For that reason, a category-wide rule would be less useful than checking the particular appliance and contract.
Use reliability data as context, not a promise
Consumer Reports’ appliance reliability guide, updated September 16, 2026, draws on member survey evidence across major appliance categories, including refrigerators and laundry. Its rankings can help you compare brands, but they do not predict whether a particular unit will fail. Consumer Reports appliance reliability guide.

#1 Best Overall
- Automatic Induction Protection: Protect your electrical devices by interrupting the current flow from voltage spikes, instant surge, voltage fluctuation, brownout, and that voltage which are too high or too low. if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us immediately
- Delay Function: If the device encounters (electric power) voltage fluctuations, it will protect the appliance by providing the output until the voltage stabilizes. The “DELAY” indicator would be turned on to inform its user. The appliance would be delayed for 3 mins to confirm that the voltage is stable so that it could be re-established.
- Working Principle: As there is an interruption in the current flow, the Voltage surge protector gives an interval of 3 minutes to allow the voltage to stabilize. Additionally, the Voltage surge protector provides protection against voltage spikes that can damage electrical equipment.
- Applicable Equipment: The voltage (surge) protector suit for Air Conditioners, Freezers, Ice Makers, Washing Machines, or any Large Appliances.
- LED INDICATOR: Light indicators for Normal(Output), High(Overvoltage), Low(Undervoltage), and Delay
Yale Appliance’s 2026 reliability article describes more than 33,000 annual service calls handled by its technicians. It reports service rates of 3.7% for Speed Queen, 5.5% for LG, and 7.4% for Miele, with eleven brands below 10%. These are figures from a retailer’s own service records and the brands it sells or services—not national failure rates. Its customer, product, and geographic mix may differ from yours. What the refrigerator evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports says it surveyed 95,711 members about 108,573 refrigerators purchased from 2012 through 2022. In an earlier member survey, median repair costs for seven specified refrigerator problems ranged from about $150 to $240; the article does not state the survey year, so those figures are not a current quote. Consumer Reports also says refrigerators less than 10 years old are usually more economical to repair. That is editorial guidance based on its data, not a guarantee for every model or repair. For a repair-versus-replacement comparison, Consumer Reports’ tool considers product age, purchase cost, depreciation, repair cost, and the cost of a new product. Those are useful factors to consider alongside a plan’s price and limits. Consumer Reports repair-or-replace tool.
What to compare in an appliance service contract
“Extended warranty” is often used loosely. A separately sold service contract is not necessarily an extension of the manufacturer’s warranty; its actual terms determine what it covers. The FTC explains that a home service contract can cover appliances, but it is a paid contract, and some contracts duplicate included coverage, cover only part of a product, or make repairs difficult to obtain. Put the plan beside the alternatives rather than judging it by the monthly or one-time price alone. For the specific appliance, write down the manufacturer coverage still in force, a plausible local repair quote, the appliance’s age and replacement cost, and the contract’s likely out-of-pocket costs if you make a claim. Then ask whether the service convenience and cost predictability are worth the remaining price and risk.

If the plan’s exclusions or cap make a likely repair mostly your responsibility, or the provider cannot offer practical service in your area, its headline coverage may have little value. If a covered failure could create a bill you cannot comfortably absorb, you may reasonably value the plan for budget certainty, even if you cannot know in advance whether claims will exceed its cost.
