Use n inside a string to insert a line break at a specific point, or rely on print()’s default ending to start the next output on a new line. For example, print(f"Hello, {name}nWelcome!") puts a variable and a line break in one formatted string.
Two ways to print a new line
The right method depends on where you want the break:

In Python, n in an ordinary string represents a linefeed. The built-in print() function writes objects to a text stream and appends a newline by default; its end parameter controls that ending. See the Python 3.14.8 built-in functions reference and the Python 3.14.8 lexical analysis reference.
Print a new line after a variable
If you want a variable’s value on one line and more output on the next, call print() twice:

You can also compose both lines into one string with an f-string:

Hello, Ada
Welcome!An f-string substitutes the value of name where it appears in braces. The n in the string’s literal text creates the break. Python’s Input and Output tutorial explains f-strings and string representations.
Control the line ending
print() adds n after its output unless you set end to something else. The chosen ending is appended after the printed objects.

- Suppress the ending:
print(name, end="")leaves the next output on the same line. - Add a blank line:
print(name, end="nn")ends the current line and leaves a blank line after it. - Separate values with line breaks:
print(name, city, sep="n")uses a newline between the two values, followed by the usual ending after the last value.
For example, the first call below stays on the same line as the text printed by the second call:
print("Hello", end="")
print(" there")Add a blank line between sections
Because the string and print() each contribute their own line break in this example, there is a blank line between the sections:

print("Section onen")
print("Section two")The string’s n ends the first line, and print() adds its default ending after that. You can express the same spacing by putting both linefeeds in end:
print("Section one", end="nn")
print("Section two")Avoid common newline mistakes
- Use a regular string for an active newline. Write
"n"in your source code. A raw string such asr"n"keeps the backslash andnas literal characters instead of interpreting them as a line break. - Watch for an extra break.
print("Hellon")includes a newline in the string and then adds another newline by default. If you want only the string’s newline, useprint("Hellon", end=""). - Use formatting to insert a variable.
print("{name}")prints the literal text{name}. Useprint(f"{name}n")for an f-string, orprint("{}n".format(name))withstr.format(). - Distinguish printed content from its representation.
print()displays a string’s contents, whilerepr()shows a representation that can include quotes and escaped characters. A visiblenin a representation does not mean thatprint()will display those two characters as the line break.
Where printed output goes
By default, print() writes to sys.stdout. You can direct it to a file-like text stream with the file= parameter. How control characters appear depends on the program or tool displaying that stream.
