As of October 4, 2026, no commercial space station in this group has been established as launched or operational. The projects are at different stages: Starlab has reported a major design review, Vast has flown and deorbited an uncrewed technology demonstrator, Axiom plans to assemble its first modules at the ISS, and NASA’s latest reviewed update places Orbital Reef in design development. Dates announced by NASA or the companies are targets, not confirmed launch or operating dates.
Where each commercial station project stands
The projects differ in how they will reach orbit as well as in the evidence of progress they have reported. A design milestone or demonstration can reduce development risk, but neither is proof that a crewed station is ready to serve customers.
| Project | Planned route to orbit | Reported progress | Timing and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Axiom Station | Its modules are intended to attach to the ISS first; the assembled segment is then intended to detach and operate as a free-flying destination. | NASA’s December 19, 2024 update described a revised assembly sequence that puts the Payload, Power, and Thermal Module first. | NASA said the module could depart the ISS as early as 2028. That is a target, not a confirmed departure date. NASA described the ISS’s end of operational life as no earlier than 2030 in the same update. |
| Starlab | A free-flying station under development by Starlab Space and partners. | Starlab reported that it completed a NASA-attended Commercial Critical Design Review on February 23, 2026, a step toward manufacturing and integration. | The review does not establish a launch date. A 2027 target associated with earlier planning is historical, not a verified current launch schedule. |
| Orbital Reef | A free-flying station under development led by Blue Origin and Sierra Space with partners. | NASA’s station update archive lists a 2025 article on design-development progress. | The reviewed NASA material does not establish a current launch date or a completed 2026 critical design review. |
| Haven-1 and Haven-2 | Vast is pursuing a staged approach, from a technology demonstration to a crewed station and a multi-module follow-on. | Vast reported that Haven Demo launched on November 2, 2025, completed 49 test objectives, and was controlled-deorbited in February 2026. | Vast described Haven-1 as flight-ready in Q1 2027 and Haven-2 modules as launching from 2028. These are company targets; “flight-ready” does not mean launched or in orbit. |
What the milestones do—and do not—show
A design review is not a launch
Starlab’s reported Commercial Critical Design Review is evidence that the design passed a significant development checkpoint. It does not establish that the station’s hardware is complete, a launch is booked, or the destination is crew-ready. NASA’s record of Orbital Reef design-development progress likewise establishes progress, not an operational station or a launch date.
A demonstration is not the full station
Vast’s Haven Demo is the clearest completed orbital demonstration described here: it launched, performed its reported test objectives, and was intentionally deorbited. That is a different achievement from putting Haven-1 or Haven-2 into orbit. The company’s “flight-ready” target for Haven-1 refers to a planned development state, not an accomplished flight.

Why NASA is shifting toward commercial stations
NASA’s strategy is to move from owning and operating a government station toward buying low-Earth-orbit services from commercial providers. NASA expects to remain a customer, while commercial operators may also serve other customers. The intended transition is meant to preserve access to low Earth orbit and research as the ISS era ends, while allowing NASA to focus more resources on deep-space exploration and encouraging a broader microgravity marketplace.
NASA’s stated needs are broader than tourism. In a 2021 program release, the agency estimated that future low-Earth-orbit work would involve approximately 200 investigations annually and accommodations and training for at least two crew members. Those were NASA planning estimates published in 2021, not a current measured workload or a guarantee of demand for any station.

NASA procurement is still taking shape
On July 6, 2026, NASA said it had released a draft Request for Proposals for industry feedback. The proposed structure described in that update was a firm-fixed-price, multi-award indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity arrangement supporting station development, certification, and services. A draft solicitation is not a final contract award, and the update does not establish which providers will ultimately receive contracts.
NASA’s strategy includes early design and development support, later design and demonstration work, and eventually purchasing services after formal design acceptance and certification. This makes procurement and certification part of the transition, not administrative details to assume are already settled. The ability of operators to attract customers beyond NASA remains a business assumption rather than demonstrated demand.

Will commercial stations replace the ISS?
The intended outcome is continuity of U.S. human presence and research in low Earth orbit, not an immediate, one-for-one replacement. NASA’s 2024 update placed the ISS’s end of operational life no earlier than 2030, while Axiom’s proposed architecture depends on using the ISS as an assembly point before separating. Starlab and Orbital Reef are being developed as free-flying destinations, and Vast has described a staged path from demonstration hardware to later stations. Those different paths make a single shared “replacement launch date” misleading.
For now, the practical answer is to distinguish completed events from plans: Vast’s uncrewed demonstration flew and returned, Starlab reported a design review, and Axiom and the other station projects remain dependent on future development, launches, and—in NASA’s case—procurement and certification steps.
