A hardware security key is a separate physical device used to authenticate you to a compatible account. It may connect by plugging into a device or, when supported, tapping over a wireless interface. A FIDO security key uses public-key cryptography through a standards-based sign-in flow; it is not the same thing as every passkey, since passkeys can also be stored on a phone or computer.

What a hardware security key is

A hardware security key is a physical authenticator: a separate object that helps prove your identity when you sign in. CISA describes using a physical security key, such as a YubiKey, to log in. The key works only with services that accept its authentication method and devices that support its connection. CISA’s MFA guidance describes physical keys and other sign-in methods.

“Hardware security key” describes the physical authenticator. FIDO2 describes a standards-based authentication system, not a particular key model. FIDO2 combines the W3C Web Authentication (WebAuthn) specification with the FIDO Alliance’s Client to Authenticator Protocol (CTAP). Together, these standards enable public-key-cryptography-based authentication. FIDO Alliance’s authentication specifications explain the relationship.

How a FIDO security key works

During a FIDO/WebAuthn sign-in, the service and authenticator use a cryptographic credential as proof of identity rather than relying on a reusable password or a manually entered code as that proof. The authenticator creates a response for the service’s sign-in request; the service checks it using the associated public-key credential.

The security benefit against phishing comes from verifier-name binding. NIST explains that the authenticator’s secret is selected based on the authenticated domain name of the verifier. A response for the real service therefore is not simply a code that a fake sign-in page can collect and relay. NIST defines phishing resistance as the ability of an authentication protocol to prevent disclosure of authentication secrets and valid authenticator outputs to an impostor verifier without depending on the user to spot the deception. NIST SP 800-63B describes this property.

This is protection against verifier impersonation in the authentication protocol, not a guarantee against every way an account or device could be compromised. By contrast, NIST says manually entered one-time passcodes are not phishing-resistant because they are not bound to the sign-in session.

Hardware security key vs. passkey

A passkey is a FIDO credential; it does not necessarily mean a separate physical device. FIDO says passkeys can be stored on a phone, computer, or hardware security key. Some are bound to a physical key, while others are stored on a platform device or synced by a provider. So a hardware security key can hold a passkey, but the terms are not synonyms. FIDO Alliance’s passkey overview describes where passkeys can be stored.

How a security key differs from other sign-in methods

Security keys are one option among several multifactor authentication methods. Their defining distinction is the physical authenticator and, when used through FIDO/WebAuthn, phishing resistance based on domain binding. Other methods have different requirements and protections:

  • Authenticator-app prompts: CISA identifies number-matching app prompts as another MFA method. They require access to the app and user interaction.
  • One-time codes: These are entered manually and, according to NIST, are not phishing-resistant because they are not bound to the sign-in session.
  • Text or email codes: CISA lists these as alternative methods. Their availability and security characteristics differ from a FIDO security key.
  • Biometrics: A fingerprint or face check may be part of authentication on a device, but it is not necessarily a separate hardware security key.

Which method you can use depends on what the account provider accepts. A security key’s physical connector or wireless interface also has to work with the device you use.

What to check before choosing a key

Compatibility is not universal. The cited standards and guidance do not establish that any particular key model works with every account or device. Check both sides before choosing:
