Texas Hold’em is a poker game in which you try to win the pot either by making the best five-card hand at showdown or by getting every other player to fold. Each player receives two private cards, and up to five shared cards are dealt face up. A hand can end before all five shared cards appear.
How a Texas Hold’em hand works
Players use the best five-card combination they can make from their two private hole cards and the five community cards. They may use both hole cards, just one, or neither. The hand proceeds through up to four betting rounds: preflop, flop, turn, and river.
1. The button, blinds, and deal
A marker called the button identifies the nominal dealer position and moves clockwise after each hand. The player immediately to its left usually posts the small blind; the next player posts the big blind. These are forced bets made before the deal. The big blind is often twice the small blind, but the stakes and structure can vary. Each player then receives two face-down hole cards.
2. Preflop betting
Preflop action starts with the player to the left of the big blind and proceeds clockwise. Players can fold, call the current bet, or raise it. If no one has raised and action reaches the big blind, that player may check, which means staying in the hand without adding chips.

3. The flop
After preflop betting is complete, three community cards are dealt face up. The first active player to the left of the button acts first. If no bet has been made in the round, a player may check or bet. If someone has bet, a player may fold, call, or raise.
4. The turn
Once flop betting is complete, a fourth community card—the turn—is dealt. Another betting round follows.

5. The river
Once turn betting is complete, the fifth and final community card—the river—is dealt. The final betting round follows.
6. The result: folds or showdown
If everyone but one player folds at any point, that remaining player wins the pot without needing to show the best hand. If at least two players remain after the final betting round, they reveal their hands and the best five-card combination wins. A betting round ends when the remaining players have folded or matched the outstanding amount, subject to the applicable rules, including rules for all-in situations.
