These eight video game protagonists could make compelling villains—not because their stories establish them as evil, but because their powers, methods, or circumstances could become terrifying from another point of view. It is a playful thought experiment: in several cases, a different target, choice, or set of circumstances is all it takes to change how a hero reads.
What makes a hero work as a villain?
“Better villain” here means an intriguing antagonist concept, not an objective verdict on a character or a claim about their canon. The examples range from lethal professionals to world-shaking heroes, so they are best compared by the source of their threat, their methods, their moral record, how much player choice shapes them, their emotional vulnerabilities, and the possible scale of collateral harm. No formal ranking or scoring system is implied.
Eight protagonists with villain potential
1. Isaac Clarke — Dead Space
Isaac’s engineering suit and heavy tools are built for survival, but from the perspective of someone in his way, they make him an imposing figure who can turn improvised equipment into lethal force. His psychological strain adds another dimension to the premise: grief over Nicole and exposure to the Marker complicate the image of a steady, conventional hero. EA describes him as an engineer sent to repair the USG Ishimura, where he finds its crew slaughtered, Nicole missing, hostile Necromorphs, and his own sanity deteriorating. That is a survivor’s setup in the official account, not a villain origin; the antagonist version is a speculative shift in perspective.
2. Kratos — God of War
Kratos has already occupied the moral territory of a vengeance-driven destroyer. His earlier campaign against the Greek gods left mortal bloodshed in its wake, making the scale of his anger frightening even when the target is divine. The contrast with his later role as a father and mentor is what makes the reframe interesting: a protector with that history and power could look like a threat to anyone caught in the path of his rage. PlayStation describes the 2018 game as a story in which vengeance against Olympus is behind him and he must control the rage that defined him while mentoring and protecting Atreus.

3. Max Caulfield — Life is Strange
Max’s time-rewinding ability invites a different kind of villain story: not one built around brute force, but around the temptation to keep changing events until other people’s lives bend to her will. The power’s consequences could become catastrophic if she misused it, although that is a speculative scenario rather than a claim that she is canonically a villain. The story’s choice concerning Chloe also puts player decisions near the center of the discussion: the same protagonist can be read through the consequences of what the player chooses.
4. Corvo Attano — Dishonored
Corvo’s villain potential depends heavily on how the game is played. Teleportation, possession, and time manipulation are dangerous tools even before he uses them lethally; a high-chaos approach turns a revenge story into a trail of bodies. That makes him a particularly flexible antagonist concept. The threat is not simply what Corvo can do, but how player choices shape his methods and the world around him.

5. Kirby — Kirby
Kirby’s cute appearance makes the thought experiment funny; his ability to swallow enemies and copy their powers makes it unsettling. Put those traits in a horror framing and a cheerful, round hero starts to resemble an unstoppable force that absorbs whatever opposes it. This is comic contrast, not a serious moral accusation: the joke works because Kirby’s familiar presentation is so far from the monstrous interpretation.
6. Doom Slayer — Doom
Doom Slayer is a relentless, heavily armed force of destruction against demons. That is heroic when demons are the target; change the target and the same reputation becomes a nightmare. The villain premise rests on a simple viewpoint flip: what would his relentless pursuit look like to the person he was coming after? It is less about hidden moral complexity than about the fear generated by overwhelming force.

7. Agent 47 — Hitman
Agent 47 is better described as an antihero than a conventional hero: he is a paid killer whose disguises, infiltration skills, and professional competence are central to his work. Those same capabilities could support a stalking-antagonist story, where an apparent stranger can get close and the target may not know they are being watched. His villain potential comes from method and moral compromise, rather than extraordinary power.
8. Link — The Legend of Zelda
Link’s persistence, varied weapons, and broad abilities make him a formidable opponent in almost any situation. His near-silent presentation adds an eerie quality to the perspective shift: imagine facing an armed pursuer who keeps advancing and offers little explanation. The image is intentionally playful, but it shows how a familiar hero’s determination can feel threatening when the audience is no longer on his side.

Why the idea fits some heroes differently
These characters do not all become threatening in the same way. Isaac’s case leans on trauma and dangerous survival methods; Kratos brings a history of vengeance and a struggle to control rage; Max’s premise is about the consequences of choices involving time; and Corvo’s conduct is especially dependent on player style. Kirby’s contrast is comic, Doom Slayer’s is a change of target, Agent 47’s rests on stealth and paid killing, and Link’s on persistence and the unnerving effect of facing a familiar hero as an adversary.
That variety is the point: a convincing villain reframe can come from a power used without restraint, a morally compromised record, or simply a change in whose perspective the story follows. It does not require declaring any of these protagonists villains in their own games.
