No. The “indefinite cycle life” phrase describes a 2016 laboratory result, not a battery proven to last forever. Researchers reported up to 200,000 cycles for a specific manganese-dioxide nanowire capacitor using a PMMA gel electrolyte. That is an unusually high reported cycle count for the experimental device, but it does not show that a commercial phone, laptop, or electric-car battery can achieve the same lifetime.
What did the researchers actually test?
The study, “100k Cycles and Beyond: Extraordinary Cycle Stability for MnO2 Nanowires Imparted by a Gel Electrolyte,” was published online on April 20, 2016, in ACS Energy Letters. Its authors reported a symmetrical δ-MnO2 nanowire capacitor, not a complete commercial lithium-ion battery. The ACS paper describes a gold nanowire current collector coated with a 143–300 nm shell of δ-MnO2. The capacitor operated across a 1.2 V voltage window and used poly(methyl methacrylate), or PMMA, gel electrolyte.
The paper reports reversible cycling stability up to 200,000 cycles and average coulombic efficiency of 94–96%. Coulombic efficiency measures the charge recovered relative to the charge put in during cycling; it is not a measure of how long a consumer battery lasts between charges or how many years it remains usable.
How many cycles were tested, and what does “indefinite” mean?
The reported upper result was 200,000 cycles—not an unlimited test. UC Irvine’s April 20, 2016 account says the electrode was cycled over three months without detected capacity or power loss and without fractured nanowires. These are the university report’s observations about that experiment; they do not establish calendar life over years, performance under every operating condition, or lifetime in a finished consumer cell.

“Indefinite” is therefore headline shorthand for the striking durability observed during a bounded lab test. It should not be read literally as proof that the device could cycle forever.
What did the PMMA gel change?
The researchers compared the gel-based capacitors with otherwise identical capacitors using liquid propylene carbonate (PC) containing 1.0 M lithium perchlorate (LiClO4). The primary paper reports 2,000–8,000 cycles for the liquid-electrolyte devices, compared with up to 200,000 cycles for the PMMA-gel devices.

UC Irvine reported the researchers’ proposed explanation: the gel “plasticizes” the metal oxide, helping it flex rather than crack. That is the researchers’ explanation for the observed difference, not proof of a universal mechanism for all gel electrolytes or battery chemistries.

It was a laboratory capacitor built around a nanowire electrode. The popular word “battery” can obscure this distinction: the study did not demonstrate a full commercial battery cell, nor did it report consumer-device testing. The paper’s results establish a promising materials-level finding under the tested configuration, not a ready-to-buy battery with a guaranteed 200,000-cycle life.

The researchers and UC Irvine framed longer-lived commercial batteries as a possible future outcome. The cited 2016 sources do not establish commercialization, scale-up, consumer-cell performance, temperature performance, or aging outside the reported cycling experiment.
