Don’t enter passwords or payment details while Chrome or Firefox is warning that it cannot verify a site’s secure connection. The warning does not prove an attack is underway, but it does mean the browser cannot validate the certificate or connection conditions. Read the exact error code, then use the steps below to distinguish a device or network issue from a problem the website owner must fix.
What the Chrome and Firefox warnings mean
Chrome typically displays “Your connection is not private,” often with a code such as NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID or NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID. Firefox commonly displays “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead”; select its Advanced view to see the error code. Both warnings mean the browser could not establish that the connection meets its security requirements. They do not, by themselves, establish that someone is attacking you. Google Chrome Help and Mozilla Support explain the warnings and troubleshooting steps.
Use three clues to choose a path: the exact code, whether one site or many unrelated sites fail, and whether you are on guest Wi-Fi or using security software or a managed computer. One site failing points toward that site’s certificate; widespread failures are a reason to check the device clock, network sign-in, or HTTPS inspection. This is a diagnostic distinction, not proof of the cause.
Fix the problem safely, in this order
- Pause and note the full error code. Do not submit sensitive information on the warned page. Record the code shown in Chrome or in Firefox’s Advanced view; it helps identify whether the issue concerns time, trust, or the site name.
- Check your device’s date, time, and time zone. Correct an inaccurate clock, then reload the page. If the time is already correct, continue rather than assuming the clock is responsible.
- Check whether the problem affects one site or several. If only one public site fails, contact its owner or try again later; the site may need to renew its certificate, correct its domain coverage, or provide a complete certificate chain. If unrelated sites fail too, continue with device and network checks.
- Complete guest Wi-Fi sign-in. A hotel, café, airport, or other guest network may require portal sign-in before normal browsing works. Chrome’s guidance suggests opening an HTTP page to prompt the sign-in portal, then completing the network’s steps.
- On a computer, test Chrome in Incognito. If the site works there, investigate extensions and disable them one at a time to identify a possible cause. Incognito is only a diagnostic test; it does not make an invalid certificate safe.
- Install available operating-system updates. Chrome includes updating the operating system among its troubleshooting recommendations. Restart if the update process requires it, then try the site again.
- Check whether HTTPS traffic is being inspected. Antivirus HTTPS scanning or an employer’s inspecting proxy can affect the certificate the browser sees. Ask the security-software vendor or your organization’s IT administrator for help. Do not install a certificate or disable security protections on your own; Chrome warns that installing a certificate yourself can create a security risk.
- Escalate a site-specific certificate error. If your clock is correct and the error affects one site, send the site owner the exact code and the affected address. Certificate expiration, a domain mismatch, or an incomplete issuer chain generally requires a site-side correction.
Chrome vs. Firefox: what to check
| Browser | Where to find the clue | Useful checks from its support guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Chrome | “Your connection is not private” page; note the displayed NET::ERR_… code. |
Guest Wi-Fi portal sign-in, Incognito testing for extension issues, operating-system updates, device time, HTTPS-scanning security software, and corporate HTTPS-inspection proxies. Google Chrome Help |
| Firefox | “Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead”; open Advanced to view the code. | Use the code to distinguish time, issuer, interception, self-signed certificate, or domain-name issues; seek support for antivirus or corporate-network cases. Mozilla Support |
The labels and workflows can vary by browser version and operating system. Switching browsers is not a general fix: both browsers can warn when they cannot validate a certificate or when a network or device changes what certificate they receive.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Common certificate error codes and what to do
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID: Check the device date and time first. Chrome associates this error family with an inaccurate clock; if the clock is correct, the certificate may have a validity-date problem.NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALIDorSEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER: The browser cannot establish trust in the certificate’s issuer. Possible explanations include an untrusted or missing issuer, an incomplete intermediate certificate chain, or—on a managed network—a proxy certificate issue. Ask the network administrator if the device is managed.MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_MITM_DETECTED: Mozilla identifies this as an unknown-issuer case where a man-in-the-middle attack is detected. HTTPS inspection software can also be involved, so check whether inspection is enabled and seek support; do not assume the warning is harmless.SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN: Firefox says the certificate is not valid for the site name you opened. Notify the site owner rather than trying to bypass the warning.SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE: Firefox reports that the site’s identity certificate has expired. Verify your device clock; if it is accurate, contact the site owner.
Should you click through the warning?
For an ordinary public website, no. Mozilla warns that invalid certificates can indicate fraud or interception and says legitimate public sites should not require a certificate exception. Some warnings cannot be bypassed at all. Do not add an exception just because you recognize or trust a brand; that does not verify that the connection is reaching the legitimate site.
In a managed workplace or other controlled environment, follow instructions from a trusted IT administrator rather than installing a certificate or changing security settings yourself. If the warning is on a public site and the clock and network checks do not resolve it, wait or contact the site owner.
