Microsoft’s experimental Copilot Actions feature is designed to use visual interaction to work through apps and files. Microsoft gives organizing files and sending emails as examples—but the feature is in preview for Windows Insiders, and those examples are not a promise that it will complete every task or work with every app.
What Windows 11’s agentic AI is designed to do
Microsoft describes Copilot Actions as an agent that can use vision and reasoning to interact with apps: it can click, type and scroll as it works through a task. Its examples include organizing files and sending emails. Sorting photos is a possible kind of file-organization task, but Microsoft’s examples do not guarantee that a particular photo library, email app or workflow will be supported or handled correctly. Microsoft’s Windows agent security documentation describes the intended capabilities.
This differs from asking a chatbot for instructions: an agent attempts to carry out actions in an app or with files. That makes supervision and access controls important, not optional details.
Who can try Copilot Actions, and what is an agent workspace?
As of October 4, 2026, Microsoft Support lists Copilot Actions among experimental features in preview for Windows Insiders through Copilot Labs. Experimental Agentic Features and the agent workspace are also described as preview experiences; availability and controls may change as Microsoft rolls them out. This is not evidence that the feature is generally available to all Windows 11 users. See Microsoft’s current Experimental Agentic Features guidance for the documented status and settings.

An agent workspace is a separate environment for agents to use while performing tasks. Microsoft says an enabled agent can operate under a separate account and receive scoped access to common folders, including Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Pictures, Music and Videos. The documentation describes ways to monitor activity, take over and manage permissions. The feature is off by default in the documentation reviewed.
How to use an agent more safely
Because an agent can act on files and interact with apps, grant it only the access needed for the task and supervise what it does. Microsoft warns that models may behave incorrectly and that hostile content in documents or interface elements can attempt cross-prompt injection—content designed to manipulate an AI into disregarding its intended instructions. Potential consequences Microsoft identifies include data exfiltration and malware installation. Sensitive actions may also require additional user approval.

- Keep access scoped to the folders and apps needed for the task; avoid granting broader access without a reason.
- Monitor the agent’s activity and intervene or take over if its actions look wrong.
- Review consequential actions, particularly sending a message or changing or moving files, rather than assuming the agent has understood your intent.
- Treat instructions found inside documents or on-screen content as potentially untrusted, especially when they ask the agent to reveal information or perform unrelated actions.
These are experimental capabilities, so do not rely on them for unattended work or assume they will behave consistently across apps. Microsoft’s security guidance explains the risks and control design.

The Microsoft pages reviewed do not establish a Copilot+ PC or any particular hardware model as a requirement for Copilot Actions. Microsoft’s separate Copilot+ AI components article describes Windows AI components and Copilot+ hardware, but it does not connect those requirements to this agent feature. There is not enough evidence here to recommend buying a new PC, storage device or other product to use Copilot Actions.
