A dashboard helps expose those conditions; it does not, by itself, improve productivity.
What does real-time production visibility show?
A useful live view turns current machine and operator signals into a shared picture of the line. Depending on the equipment and system, it can show:
- Machine state, such as running, stopped, or idle.
- Units produced or output per cycle, by machine or production stage.
- Downtime duration and the recorded reason for a stop.
- Actual output compared with the shift plan.
In a seven-stage drum production line, Sicagen used IoT sensors to collect running state and units per cycle, then displayed line status across the shift. This illustrates how visibility can extend beyond a single machine, while still giving teams stage-level information they can investigate. Hakunamatata Tech’s Sicagen case
How do manufacturers implement OEE monitoring across a multi-stage production line?
Implementation begins with the questions the team needs to answer—not with a particular dashboard. For a multi-stage line, a practical approach is to map equipment and data sources, establish consistent definitions, then make the resulting information usable during the shift.

- Map the line and its decisions. Identify each stage, the production plan, and the people who need to respond when output falls behind. Decide whether the immediate need is to see machine state, count output, investigate stops, or compare actual production with plan.
- Check what each machine can report. Some equipment exposes usable control or PLC data; older or isolated machines may need retrofit sensors. Choose according to the machine’s interface and operating environment rather than assuming one sensor works everywhere.
- Choose how events are captured. Machine telemetry can record state and counts automatically. Operator-entered events can add context, such as a stop reason, but depend on clear categories and easy entry. A hybrid approach can pair automatic signals with operator classification.
- Connect the shop floor and business systems. Brownfield projects may require wireless connectivity and links to MES, ERP, or scheduling systems. Infosys describes sensors, shop-floor wireless integration, and MES/ERP scheduling connections in an aerospace maintenance, repair, and overhaul plant. Infosys’ connected-factory case
- Put the information where action happens. Present status, output, and plan-versus-actual in a shared view that supervisors and operators can access during the shift. OEE is only useful when its inputs are consistent
The Sicagen case represents overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) as Availability × Performance × Quality. That calculation is only as meaningful as the underlying data: teams need current signals and consistent definitions for operating time, expected performance, and acceptable output. If machines count cycles differently, or a stop is recorded inconsistently, a real-time OEE figure can look precise without supporting a sound decision. Hakunamatata Tech’s Sicagen case
Why classify downtime instead of recording only a stop?
A stopped machine is a symptom, not a cause. Distinguishing planned maintenance from mechanical failure or waiting for upstream material points toward different responses: maintenance planning, repair, or restoring the flow of parts. If every stop is logged under a vague category, the dashboard can show lost time but cannot reliably help a team address its source.

- High-Resolution Scan Engine The Alacrity barcode scanner features an advanced Global Shutter Scan Sensor designed for superior motion tolerance and high-speed reading. This cutting-edge technology ensures quick and precise scanning of printed barcodes on labels, as well as digital barcodes displayed on mobile phones and computer screens. It effortlessly deciphers barcodes even in challenging conditions, such as shrink-wrapped labels, partial damage, dirt, or poor print quality. NOTE: This scanner is not designed for long-distance barcode reading. If you require a model with extended range capabilities (e.g., 20 feet), please contact us.
Reason codes therefore need to be understandable and practical to enter. If operators cannot find the right category quickly, records may be incomplete or inconsistent. Machine signals can establish when a stop occurred; operator input may explain why. A hybrid record can be more informative than either source alone, provided teams use the same definitions.
What should teams compare when choosing a monitoring approach?
Production-monitoring options differ in what they capture and how far they connect into existing operations. The right fit depends on machine interfaces, the decisions to support, and the effort required to maintain dependable data.

| Choice | What it can provide | What to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Retrofit sensors or direct equipment/PLC connections | Sensors can add signals where usable machine data is unavailable; direct connections can use data already exposed by equipment. | Compatibility with the specific machine, control interface, and environment; installation and integration effort. |
| Machine telemetry or operator-entered events | Telemetry can capture state and counts; operator input can add context such as downtime reason. | Signal reliability and latency, ease of use, and whether reason categories are clear and applied consistently. |
| Machine/line view or multi-site aggregation | A local view supports shift-level response; multi-site aggregation can present conditions across facilities. | Whether teams need to act on one line, compare sites, or both—and whether the data definitions match across locations. |
| OEE-only reporting or broader production data | OEE focuses on availability, performance, and quality; added capabilities may include scrap, WIP/traceability, scheduling, and maintenance. | Which decisions matter, and what integration work is required with MES, ERP, scheduling, and existing controls. |
How does visibility become action during a shift?
The operating value comes from shortening the path from deviation to response. A team can use a live view to spot a stage falling behind plan, check whether it is stopped or running slowly, review the recorded reason, and direct the relevant operator, maintenance, or material-flow response. The system makes conditions visible; people and agreed response processes determine what happens next.
Software adoption is part of that process. Justin Skaggs, IT Delivery Manager at Worthington, described adoption as one of the hardest parts of introducing software and said the user-friendliness of L2L helped. This is a customer’s account, not proof that ease of use alone ensures adoption, but it highlights why operator workflows belong in implementation planning. L2L’s Worthington case

What results have manufacturers reported?
Vendor and implementation-partner case pages describe improvements after particular deployments. They are examples of reported outcomes, not controlled evidence that visibility alone caused the results or a forecast for another factory.
| Case report | Published outcome | Attribution and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Worthington | 350 hours of reduced unplanned downtime and $1 million in avoided machine-downtime costs | Reported by L2L; publication year not stated on the case page. The page says seven sites used real-time metrics. L2L case page |
| Aerospace MRO connected factory | OEE rose from 57% to 70%; customer delivery adherence increased by 5% in the first six months | Reported by Infosys as benefits of its connected-factory implementation; publication year not stated on the case page. Infosys case page |
| Sicagen drum line | 40% improvement in OEE, 20% reduction in unplanned downtime, 25% improvement in first-pass yield, and 30% reduction in cycle-time variance | Reported by Hakunamatata Tech; publication year not stated. The source says “improvement” for OEE, so it should not be read as a 40-percentage-point rise. Sicagen case page |
| Austral wire-harness production | OEE moved from 62% to 78%, while unplanned downtime moved from 18% to 9% within six months of go-live | Reported by Austral Manufacturing Software as one implementation’s outcome; publication year not stated. Austral case page |
These figures show what the named organizations’ vendor-published case pages claim for their implementations. They do not establish a typical improvement, a cross-industry effect, or a guarantee for a different line.

What is OEE and how is it calculated in real time for factory floors?
OEE combines Availability, Performance, and Quality: in the Sicagen case’s representation, OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. In real-time monitoring, current machine-state and output signals can update the inputs during production, while quality data and agreed production definitions determine whether the combined figure is meaningful. A live number should be treated as an operational indicator based on the data available—not as a substitute for checking definitions, data quality, or the cause behind a change.
