CloudTrail can show which assumed-role session made recorded AWS API calls, but a shared role ARN alone cannot tell you whether the caller was a person or an AI agent. To find what that session touched, trace its STS role-assumption event into later service events—and first confirm that CloudTrail was configured to collect the relevant resource-level data events.
Can CloudTrail tell whether a person or an AI agent used an AWS role?
Not from the role ARN alone. An AssumedRole identity in a CloudTrail event represents temporary role credentials and includes role/session context; it does not independently classify the caller as human or automated. AWS documents identity fields and controls, not a universal AI-agent detector. AWS: CloudTrail userIdentity element
CloudTrail can preserve an asserted identity, such as an STS source identity, when the identity workflow supplies it. That value is only as trustworthy as the system that sets it and the policy and operational process that bind it to the originating person or workload. A role session name, source IP, or userAgent can add context, but none by itself proves who—or what—was acting.
How do I trace an assumed role to its later API calls?
- Find the STS assumption event. Search the CloudTrail records for
AssumeRole,AssumeRoleWithSAML, orAssumeRoleWithWebIdentity. Record the caller identity, target role, role session name, and any source identity or session tags present. AWS documents these STS calls as logged events that can be mapped to a session principal. AWS: Logging IAM and AWS STS API calls with AWS CloudTrail - Identify the resulting session. Use the assumed-role session ARN and principal identifier, along with the role issuer and any available source identity, to distinguish that session from other sessions using the same role. Check the assumption event’s time and identity context.
- Find downstream service events for that session. Correlate later events by the session principal and role/session identity, not merely by role ARN. Inspect each event’s time, service and operation, resources, request parameters, source address, and user-agent context where available.
- Validate coverage before drawing a conclusion. Check the trail or event data store’s selectors for the relevant region, service, resource, and event type. A missing event is meaningful only if the event would have been collected and retained.
Event fields vary by event and service; a particular record will not necessarily contain every field listed above. CloudTrail log-file display order is not a reliable execution timeline, so use event timestamps and session correlation rather than treating the displayed sequence as a stack trace. Which identity fields help—and what do they establish?
| Field or mechanism | What it can tell you | Limit to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
userIdentity.type, assumed-role ARN, and principal identifier |
Whether the recorded API event used assumed-role credentials and which role session AWS associated with it. | Does not independently identify the session as human or agent activity. AWS documentation |
sessionContext.sessionIssuer |
The role that issued the temporary credentials. | Identifies the issuing role, not the individual actor behind a shared role. AWS documentation |
sessionContext.sourceIdentity |
An asserted identity that can appear in the role-assumption event and subsequent service events when configured. AWS supports policy conditions to require or constrain it; once set, it cannot be changed during the session and it persists through role chaining. | Its value is useful only if the identity workflow reliably binds it to the originating identity. AWS: Monitor and control actions taken with assumed roles |
| Role session name | A label that helps distinguish sessions and correlate events. | A supplied label is context, not definitive identity proof. AWS documentation |
| Session tags | Additional session context; tags can be configured as transitive to carry through role chaining. | Tags and source identity are distinct mechanisms with different semantics. A tag value is not, by itself, authenticated proof of the actor. AWS: Logging IAM and AWS STS API calls with AWS CloudTrail |
For a stronger attribution trail, have a trusted federation or workload broker supply identity context and configure IAM trust-policy conditions to require or constrain the values your process depends on. AWS describes source identity and session controls in its assumed-role monitoring guidance. Logging a caller-supplied label without a trustworthy binding process does not establish the caller’s nature.
How do I see what an assumed role accessed?
Use downstream CloudTrail events to identify the recorded API operations and their event-specific resource and request details. Management events can show control-plane actions, such as changing a service configuration. Resource-level actions—such as accessing objects or other data—may be data events and need separate collection. Check each event’s resource and request parameters rather than inferring access from the role’s permissions: permissions describe what a session could do, while recorded events show what CloudTrail captured it doing.

CloudTrail Event history does not include data events. Data events are generally not enabled by default for trails, and collection depends on the selectors configured for the trail or event data store. Consequently, finding no matching entry in Event history does not establish that a role never accessed a resource. AWS: Understanding CloudTrail events and AWS: Logging data events
How should I configure coverage for an investigation?
- List the activity and resources that matter. Identify the AWS services, resource types, regions, and operations the investigation needs to observe.
- Inspect the current selectors. Review the relevant trail or event data store and confirm its data-event selectors include those resources and activity. Do not assume that enabling a trail automatically records every data-plane call.
- Scope collection deliberately. Select the relevant resource types and activity rather than enabling broad collection without considering cost. AWS notes that data-event logging can incur additional charges; confirm current selector support and pricing when configuring it. AWS: Logging data events
- Preserve the records needed for correlation. Make sure your investigation can access the relevant event records and their retention period. If records are missing, consider both collection coverage and retention before deciding what happened.
What conclusions can the logs support?
- Supported: “CloudTrail recorded these API events under this assumed-role session,” when the events and session identifiers support that link.
- Not established by the role ARN or labels alone: “A human definitely did this” or “an AI agent definitely did this.” That stronger attribution requires a trustworthy identity assertion and an operational process that binds the assertion to the actor.
- Not established by silence alone: “The session did not access the resource,” unless you have confirmed the relevant event type and resource were within collection coverage and the records were retained.
Keep the distinction clear in incident notes: recorded session activity is evidence about AWS API calls; the identity of the person or automation behind the session depends on the provenance and enforcement of the identity information attached to it.
