DLNA stands for Digital Living Network Alliance. Its guidelines help compatible devices on the same network discover, share, and play digital media—for example, letting a TV find video stored on a computer. DLNA is not a subscription service or one required app, and compatibility does not mean every device can play every file.

What DLNA does

DLNA defines interoperability guidelines and device roles for sharing digital media across a network. A compatible television or media player can browse content exposed by a server, then play selected items if the player supports their formats and features. The devices may be dedicated hardware or software running on a computer or other networked equipment.

DLNA discovery and control conventions are built around UPnP. Media is streamed using HTTP; RTSP is also described as an optional transport in Microsoft’s protocol documentation. These details describe the protocols involved, not a guarantee that discovery or playback will work in every home network.

DLNA is distinct from internet streaming services: it does not itself provide a catalog, account, or subscription. It is a way for compatible devices to communicate about media available on a network.

DLNA device roles

A device can perform more than one role. The names describe what it does in a particular media-sharing setup.

Role What it does Typical interaction
Digital Media Server (DMS) Stores or exposes media on the network. Makes a library available for other devices to browse or access.
Digital Media Player (DMP) Finds a server’s content list and plays selected media. The player browses the server and requests playback itself.
Digital Media Renderer (DMR) Plays media when instructed by a controller. A controller directs the renderer; the media is supplied by a server.
Digital Media Controller (DMC) Finds content on a server and directs a renderer to play it. A controller selects an item and tells a renderer what to play.

For example, a computer sharing a video library can act as a DMS. A TV that browses and plays that library can act as a DMP. In a controller-based setup, a phone can act as a DMC and tell a TV acting as a DMR to play content from the server.

How to play media from a computer on a TV

The exact controls vary by computer, TV, and software, so there is no universal DLNA menu path. The basic setup is to make media available from a server and then browse for it from the TV or direct a renderer with a controller.

  1. Make the library available. Enable a DLNA-compatible media server on the computer or other device holding the files, and allow it to share the intended folders. A network-attached storage device is one possible host, not a requirement.
  2. Connect the devices to a working network. The TV or player must be able to discover the server. Microsoft’s DLNA extension documentation specifies same-subnet IPv4 addresses in the context of that extension; this should not be treated as a universal router rule for every DLNA setup.
  3. Open the TV’s media-browsing feature. Look for the network media server or computer in the TV’s media, network, or source interface. If the TV is a DMP, browse the server’s folders or library and select a file.
  4. Alternatively, use a controller. In a DMC/DMR arrangement, choose content from the server in a controller app and select the renderer as the playback destination. The available controls depend on the devices and software.
  5. Check the result on the exact device pair. A server appearing in the TV’s list confirms discovery, not that a particular file can be decoded or played. Verify the file format and resolution against the player’s specifications.

Why a DLNA device may not play a file

DLNA compatibility does not guarantee support for every codec, container, resolution, or playback feature. A TV can find a server successfully and still reject one video because the file uses an unsupported combination of encoding and container, or exceeds the player’s supported capabilities.

  • Check the exact model’s supported formats. Manufacturer lists are model-specific. Sony, for example, publishes supported-format information for its own Blu-ray and network media players; another manufacturer’s list may differ.
  • Distinguish a codec from a container. A filename extension alone may not identify every property relevant to playback. Compare the file’s video and audio codecs, container, and resolution with the player’s documentation.
  • Check whether the server can transcode. Some server software can convert media into a format a player accepts, but the capability and results depend on the server and device. Do not assume transcoding is available in every setup.
  • Separate discovery from streaming. If the server is absent, investigate whether the devices can discover one another on the network. If the server appears but playback fails, format support or streaming behavior is a more relevant place to check.

What DLNA 4.0 says about formats

DLNA 4.0 adds specific media-format profile requirements; these are statements about that guideline version, not a promise that older DLNA products support the same formats. The Digital Living Network Alliance’s DLNA 4.0 white paper identifies mandatory HD AVC in MPEG-4 containers and mandatory HD and UHD HEVC in DASH containers.

The same white paper says that every media resource a DMS exposes to media-rendering devices must be available in a mandatory Media Format Profile. It also expects server-side transcoding when needed to make resources available in those profiles. That requirement should not be generalized to every product carrying an older DLNA designation: check the device’s version and manufacturer specifications.

What to check before relying on DLNA

  • Confirm which role each device supports: server, player, renderer, controller, or more than one.
  • Check the player’s supported audio, video, image, container, codec, and resolution specifications for the exact model.
  • Confirm that the server exposes the folders or library you want to access and can stream the media.
  • If a file is unsupported, check whether the server has compatible transcoding and whether the player can receive the converted stream.
  • For a specific connection failure, consult the devices’ network and DLNA documentation; support and behavior depend on product and setup.
