You can catch many video-pipeline regressions in CI with a small, deterministic input, a test that runs the real transformation code, and structured checks of the output. Pytest fixtures can create and clean up test context; ffprobe can report output properties as JSON; and HTTP recording/replay can help isolate webhook-facing code. These techniques can keep tests compact, but they do not make every CI run or artifact store free: check your CI provider’s current account and retention terms.
What to test in a video pipeline
Start with the behavior that matters to your application, not a snapshot of every field the tools happen to emit. A useful integration test exercises the actual pipeline entry point on a known input, then checks a few output properties that express the expected result.
Choose cases from your pipeline’s meaningful paths. Depending on what it supports, these might include an ordinary valid clip, an input with an unusual or missing stream, audio or subtitle handling, and malformed input that should be rejected. A small synthetic clip can make a good fixture, but it is only valuable if its contents and generation process are controlled. A checked-in sample can be simpler when it is compact and its provenance and expected properties are clear.
- Keep the fixture small enough to run repeatedly in CI.
- Make its relevant characteristics explicit, such as whether it contains video, audio, or subtitles.
- Test rejection behavior deliberately when invalid inputs are part of the application contract.
- Avoid tying a test to incidental metadata that is not part of the behavior you need to guarantee.
Pytest describes a fixture as a defined, reliable, consistent context for tests. Fixtures can depend on other fixtures and use scopes, which lets setup be composed and reused without hiding what a test requires. See pytest’s fixture documentation.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Set up and clean up media with pytest fixtures
Use a fixture to place a known input in a temporary directory or expose a stable checked-in fixture path. If setup creates temporary files or starts an external service, put its teardown after yield; pytest runs that teardown after the test, including when the test fails.
import pytest
@pytest.fixture
def input_clip(tmp_path):
# Illustrative: use a small, controlled fixture maintained by your project.
source = "tests/fixtures/short-input.mp4"
staged = tmp_path / "input.mp4"
staged.write_bytes(open(source, "rb").read())
return staged
@pytest.fixture
def output_path(tmp_path):
return tmp_path / "output.mp4"
For a generated clip, make generation part of fixture setup and keep the generation parameters under version control. The exact generator and edge cases depend on your pipeline; there is no universally correct synthetic clip. Avoid sharing mutable output files between tests unless the test is specifically about shared state.
Pytest does not provide special cleanup handling for SIGTERM or SIGQUIT. If a test manages important external resources, such as a service or long-running process, plan for those termination cases separately so an interrupted job does not leave resources behind.

Run the real transform and inspect output as JSON
Invoke the same transformation path your application uses rather than testing a substitute implementation. Then run ffprobe on the resulting file and parse its JSON output. ffprobe gathers information from multimedia streams and supports machine-readable output; JSON makes it practical to assert selected properties without scraping human-oriented terminal text. The ffprobe documentation describes its output formats and stream selection options.
import json
import subprocess
def probe(path):
result = subprocess.run(
[
"ffprobe", "-v", "error",
"-show_streams", "-show_format",
"-of", "json", str(path),
],
check=True,
capture_output=True,
text=True,
)
return json.loads(result.stdout)
def test_transcode_has_expected_video(input_clip, output_path):
# Replace this call with the pipeline's real entry point.
run_pipeline(input_clip, output_path)
data = probe(output_path)
video_streams = [s for s in data["streams"] if s["codec_type"] == "video"]
assert len(video_streams) == 1
assert video_streams[0]["width"] == 640
assert video_streams[0]["height"] == 360
The example is illustrative; it has not been run against a particular application or FFmpeg build. Replace the dimensions and stream expectations with the contract your pipeline promises. If audio presence, container format, or codec is material, assert those fields too. When only one stream matters, ffprobe’s stream-selection options can limit inspection to that stream.
Prefer semantic assertions to whole-file goldens
A “golden” should mean an intentional expectation, not necessarily an exact copy of every ffprobe field. Assert stable, behavior-relevant values such as stream presence, dimensions, or a required codec. Full JSON snapshots can be useful when you genuinely need to detect any metadata change, but they can also fail on irrelevant differences between environments or FFmpeg builds. Control and verify the toolchain if your expected values depend on a particular build.

Preserve evidence when CI fails
A failing assertion is more actionable when the job retains the probe JSON, relevant pipeline logs, test report, and—when size and privacy permit—the generated output. CI workflow artifacts are intended to preserve job outputs such as test results and failure data, and can pass files to another job. They are not dependency caches: use caching for reusable dependencies, and artifacts for outputs you need to inspect or transfer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep retained media narrowly scoped. Video may contain sensitive content, and large outputs can consume storage. Before relying on artifact retention, verify your CI platform’s current limits, retention settings, and any account-specific charges; the testing approach itself does not establish that storage is free.

HTTP recording and replay can isolate HTTP-facing code from a live service. The pytest plugin directory lists pytest-recording, which is powered by VCR.py. Recorded exchanges can make tests repeatable, but the plugin listing does not establish that a particular provider’s signatures, delivery behavior, or webhook semantics are modeled correctly.

Test your application’s webhook contract explicitly. Depending on the provider and application, that may include signature verification, timestamp tolerance, duplicate delivery and idempotency, event-order assumptions, and error responses. Keep secrets out of recorded fixtures; use safe test credentials or controlled local fakes where recording would capture sensitive values. A replay test that only proves an HTTP response was returned is not a substitute for tests of verification and duplicate-event handling.
Keep the CI workflow reproducible and proportionate
Software-based fixtures, pytest, ffprobe, and CI jobs can make this workflow low-cost, but no universal free quota or storage allowance is established here. Costs and limits depend on the CI provider, account, job usage, and artifact retention terms, so verify those terms for your setup.
Quick Recap
- Pin or otherwise control the FFmpeg/ffprobe environment when output expectations depend on build-specific behavior.
- Run the small, high-value fixture set on routine changes; reserve larger or slower media cases for a suitable separate job if necessary.
- Record enough context in failure output to reproduce the problem: input case, pipeline command or parameters, probe JSON, and relevant logs.
- Keep assertions tied to promised behavior, and update a golden only after confirming the output change is intentional.
