Those features address different risks: synchronization affects how writes are persisted, quotas limit logical consumption, and free-space thresholds reserve room on the physical host. The published descriptions explain the intended design; they are not independent crash tests or a measured comparison of the modes.
What Lioran S3’s durability modes change
Lioran’s October 1, 2026 durability article describes strict and balanced as different persistence tradeoffs. It does not publish benchmark numbers or establish that either mode survives every hardware, filesystem, or power-failure scenario.

| Mode | Vendor-described behavior | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
strict |
Uses explicit flush and sync boundaries before storage metadata is treated as durable. | Places more emphasis on synchronous persistence for each write; validate its behavior on your own storage stack. |
balanced |
Uses less per-write synchronous persistence and relies more on operating-system and filesystem writeback. | The vendor says this can improve throughput, with different assumptions about sudden power loss. No quantified throughput or durability comparison is provided. |
The documented strict write path
The vendor presents the strict path conceptually as: receive bytes, write a staged file, flush, call fsync, commit metadata, promote the staged object, then acknowledge success. This describes the intended ordering, not a published guarantee for every possible failure window.
Choosing a mode during evaluation
Use strict while validating persistence behavior if synchronous boundaries are important to your evaluation. Then test the mode and underlying disk, filesystem, power, and operating-system configuration you expect to run. The vendor’s material does not establish which mode is appropriate for every workload.

How staged writes and replacements are intended to behave
Lioran describes incomplete writes as temporary rather than completed objects visible through normal object APIs. Its documented lifecycle separates staged data from committed object state: a multipart upload may have stored parts without a final assembled object, and completion is the transition to a committed object.
For replacement, the stated design goal is to preserve the previous committed object if a new write is interrupted. A vendor walkthrough excerpt also says a PUT checks host free-space guardrails before receiving data, applies an overwrite-aware quota projection, assigns separate object and staging identifiers, and streams bytes into staging. It mentions an exact quota check after the actual byte count is known. These descriptions are design information, not evidence that every interruption or crash case has passed testing. See the durability article and the PUT walkthrough excerpt.
Why bucket quotas and free-space guardrails are separate
A bucket quota limits logical consumption by a bucket or tenant. A minimum-free-space threshold protects physical free capacity on the host. One cannot stand in for the other: a bucket may have quota remaining while the disk is nearly full, or the host may have free space while a bucket has reached its limit.
| Control | Scope | What it helps limit |
|---|---|---|
| Bucket quota | Logical bucket or tenant consumption | How much object data that bucket or tenant may use. |
| Minimum free-space threshold | Physical host storage | How much free disk capacity the object store may consume before the configured reserve is reached. |
The durability article gives BASTION_MIN_FREE_SPACE_BYTES=536870912—536,870,912 bytes, or 512 MiB—as an example setting. It is not presented as a universal safe reserve. Size the threshold for the actual disk and neighboring workloads; the vendor also says an optional percentage-based threshold is available. Use the host guardrail together with bucket quotas.
What integrity checks can—and cannot—do
Lioran says its pipeline tracks integrity metadata such as SHA-256 and identifies upload verification, corruption detection, download validation, and ETag or integrity identifiers as uses. A checksum can help establish whether content matches an expected value; it does not create another recoverable copy of that content.
The vendor explicitly cautions that checksums do not replace backups or replication. Keep a separate recovery copy appropriate to your needs. An external drive is one possible physical backup destination, but the cited material does not establish compatibility or recommend a particular device or backup procedure.

Lioran describes graceful shutdown as draining active requests before metadata stores close, but notes that orderly shutdown does not address uncontrolled termination. Its article proposes validation scenarios rather than reporting completed crash-test results.
Test the failure cases that matter to your deployment
- Exercise PUT and multipart operations during termination, including interrupted uploads and incomplete-part cleanup.
- Check GET behavior during shutdown, and verify objects after metadata-store and proxy restarts, host reboots, and filesystem remounts.
- In a disposable environment, test disk exhaustion and quota boundaries. Do not deliberately fill a production disk to test a guardrail.
- After restarts and interrupted operations, compare content checksums and inspect for orphaned staged data.
- Test credential rotation, and monitor memory while streaming large objects.
- Repeat restart tests and pin the software version during validation so results can be compared consistently.
These are suggested checks from the vendor’s published guidance, not a record of tests already passed.

Pre-alpha scope and maturity
The vendor’s V1 Pre-Alpha overview, also posted October 1, 2026, describes Lioran S3 as a self-hosted Rust object-storage server built around a single-node engine. It says RocksDB stores metadata while object payloads reside on the filesystem. The overview also says the current server does not yet expose a drop-in AWS S3 compatibility layer; clustering and replication are roadmap items, not current capabilities described there.
The overview warns that APIs, storage formats, protocol details, SDK behavior, and operational assumptions may change before stable releases. Swaraj Puppalwar, identified there as Founder & CTO at Lioran Group and Lioran Developer Solutions, writes: “Pre-alpha warning: APIs, storage formats, protocol details, SDK behavior, and operational assumptions may change before stable releases. Do not use this release for mission-critical workloads without rigorous validation.” Treat the durability, staging, and guardrail descriptions accordingly: as vendor statements about a pre-alpha design, not an independently verified reliability contract.
