Before installing a new hard drive in a NAS, run its SMART extended (long) self-test and review the result in the drive’s self-test log. Western Digital describes the extended test as longer and more thorough than the short test. A pass is a useful screening result—not a guarantee against future failure.

Run the SMART extended self-test

Use the drive maker’s utility or your NAS’s storage-management interface if it exposes the drive’s self-test options. Choose the extended or long test, rather than relying only on a short test. The exact labels and available options depend on the drive and the software.

  1. Start the extended/long self-test. Allow it to complete; it takes longer than a short self-test. The official guidance cited here does not establish a universal duration or a required buyer burn-in period.
  2. Check the self-test log. Confirm that the test completed and review its reported result. WD says the result is retained in the drive’s self-test log.
  3. Review SMART health information in context. SMART attributes, thresholds, and raw-value interpretations are manufacturer-defined, not a universal scoring system. Use the drive maker’s guidance rather than assuming a raw number has the same meaning across brands or models.
  4. Respond to reported errors or failure risk. Back up any data on the drive and investigate replacement if SMART reports errors or a failure. Do not treat a warning as a clean bill of health.

Western Digital’s SMART guidance calls the extended test “a longer and more thorough version of the short test.” That makes it a sensible incoming screen, but the available official guidance does not say that passing predicts a particular service life or proves the drive will remain reliable.

Check that the drive fits your NAS

A successful self-test does not establish that a drive is a suitable match for a particular NAS. Before installation, check the NAS maker’s compatibility information for the exact drive model and NAS model. WD specifically advises users to consult the NAS vendor’s recommendations.

  • Three-year limited warranty protection plan included and three year Rescue Data Recovery Services included
  • Compatibility: Confirm the exact model against the NAS vendor’s current list or recommendations; do not rely only on a product-family name.
  • Recording method: Check whether the drive uses CMR or SMR when that distinction matters for your file system and workload. WD identifies Red Plus and Red Pro as CMR and recommends those models for ZFS systems. That is guidance for those WD families, not a universal rule about every SMR drive and file system.
  • Workload rating: Compare expected annual host reads, writes, and verification with the rating for the exact drive model. Ratings are model-specific. For example, Seagate’s cited NAS HDD manual gives a rating below 180 TB/year for the family it covers and cautions that exceeding it may affect reliability; that figure should not be applied to other drives.
  • Warranty and support: Confirm coverage for the exact model and serial number in the market where it was purchased. Seagate’s warranty lookup, for example, asks for the serial number, model or part number, and country of purchase.

These checks answer a different question from the SMART test: whether the drive is an appropriate match for your system and expected use. Manufacturer testing statements can provide context, but they do not replace checking the individual drive.

What manufacturer testing claims do—and do not—show

Manufacturers may describe qualification procedures for a product line. WD says its Red Pro drives are shipped with extended thermal-cycle burn-in testing. Synology says its Plus Series drives undergo compatibility and stress testing and reports more than 500,000 cumulative hours of stress testing for the series. Those are manufacturer statements about product lines, not test results for a particular retail unit.

Synology’s current Plus Series page lists 3.5-inch SATA models from 2 TB through 20 TB, describes them as CMR and positioned for 24/7 use, and states a three-year limited warranty. The listed warranty period begins on the purchase date shown on the receipt. Synology also cautions that MTBF is a statistical measure and may not reflect actual product life. Check the current specifications and compatibility information for your NAS before relying on a series-level claim.

How to interpret the result

  • Test completed without a reported problem: Keep the log result as a useful baseline, then proceed only if the drive also suits your NAS and workload. A pass cannot rule out later failure.
  • Test reports an error or SMART indicates failure risk: Protect data on the drive and investigate replacement rather than installing it as though it had passed.
  • Raw SMART values look unusual but no failure is reported: Consult the drive maker’s documentation for that model. Attribute names, thresholds, and raw-value logic vary by manufacturer.
