A Bitcoin address is a shareable destination that tells a sender where to direct a payment. It is not a wallet, a balance, or a private key: a Bitcoin transaction creates an output with conditions that the receiver’s wallet must be able to satisfy to spend the funds.

What is a Bitcoin address?

A Bitcoin address is a convenient, human-readable representation associated with a payment destination. In the transaction itself, the payment is an output with spending conditions—often described using a locking script or witness program. The receiver’s wallet manages the keys or other data needed to meet those conditions.

That distinction matters: an address does not contain bitcoin or prove that a particular balance belongs to someone. It is information a sender can use to construct a payment output.

How is an address different from a wallet or private key?

  • Address: A shareable destination representation for receiving a payment.
  • Wallet: Software or a device that manages keys and helps create, track, and spend transactions. A wallet can generate many addresses.
  • Private key: Secret information used by a wallet to authorize spending under the relevant output conditions. An address does not reveal the private key.

What do common Bitcoin address prefixes mean?

On Bitcoin mainnet, the opening characters often help identify an address format. They indicate an address family or encoding, but a prefix does not reveal every detail of the spending setup.

Address type Common mainnet form What it represents Important qualification
P2PKH, often called legacy Base58; starts with 1 A pay-to-public-key-hash output family. “Legacy” does not mean invalid; usability depends on wallet support and transaction policy.
P2SH Base58; starts with 3 A pay-to-script-hash family that can represent script conditions. The prefix alone does not show whether the address uses nested SegWit, multisignature, or another construction.
Native SegWit v0 Bech32; starts with bc1q Witness version 0, including P2WPKH and P2WSH forms. Confirm that the sending wallet or service accepts the relevant format.
Taproot, or P2TR (SegWit v1) Bech32m; commonly starts with bc1p A native SegWit version 1 output. BIP 341 specifies a 32-byte witness program. Some wallets or services may not support Taproot addresses.

The familiar bc1 beginning therefore covers more than one format: native SegWit v0 commonly uses bc1q, while Taproot commonly uses bc1p. The format is defined by the witness version and encoding, not just by the shared first four characters. See BIP 173 and BIP 350.

How should you use an address when sending bitcoin?

  1. Select the Bitcoin network in the sending wallet or service and make sure it matches the recipient’s intended network.
  2. Check that the sending service supports the recipient’s address type. This is especially important for Taproot: Bitcoin.org’s wallet guidance notes that some wallets and services do not yet support sending to or receiving from Taproot addresses.
  3. Copy the address from the recipient’s wallet or service and verify it in the sending interface before confirming the payment.

Address appearance varies by network. The prefixes in the table are mainnet conventions; Bitcoin Core documents separate testnet forms, including m or n for P2PKH, 2 for P2SH, and tb1 for SegWit. Do not identify an address type by mainnet examples alone when using another network. See Bitcoin Core’s SegWit wallet documentation.

Does a prefix tell you whether an address is safe or compatible?

No. A prefix is useful for recognizing a broad address family, but it does not establish the recipient’s wallet setup or whether a particular sending service can handle it. For example, 3 identifies the P2SH family; it does not prove that an address is multisignature or nested SegWit. Compatibility depends on the wallets or services involved.

There is no universally best format based on the address string alone. The relevant questions are what output family the address represents and whether both sides support it. Any fee or efficiency comparison also depends on the actual transaction and fee conditions; the prefix by itself does not guarantee a fixed saving.

Why are Bitcoin addresses encoded in different ways?

Bitcoin uses different address conventions for different output families and witness versions. Legacy and P2SH addresses use Base58 forms; native SegWit formats use Bech32 or Bech32m. BIP 173 describes Bech32 as a checksummed base32 format for native segregated-witness output addresses, while Bech32m is used for newer witness versions, including Taproot.

These visible strings are ways to represent payment destinations. The transaction output and its spending conditions—not the address as an account—are what determine how the recipient can later spend the funds. For a plain-language glossary, see Bitcoin Design’s address entry.
