Before buying another mesh point, move your router into an open, elevated spot that serves the rooms where you actually use Wi-Fi. A poorly placed router can leave parts of a home with weak coverage, and adding a mesh node will not help if that node also has a weak connection to the rest of the network.

Where to put your Wi-Fi router

Place the main router in an open, elevated location, as close as practical to the rooms and devices that need reliable Wi-Fi. A cabinet, the floor, or a far corner can put walls, furniture, and distance between the router and the places you care about. TP-Link’s router placement guidance recommends an open, central location; in practice, “central” means central to your household’s important coverage areas, not necessarily the geometric center of the building.

  • Move it out of enclosed furniture and away from large obstructions where possible.
  • Raise it off the floor and leave space around it.
  • Consider the rooms and devices that need service, along with walls, floors, and other obstacles in the way.
  • Change one thing at a time, then test the same rooms again so you can tell whether the move helped.

There is no universally correct distance or placement for every home. Building materials, layout, router capabilities, and interference all affect how a signal reaches a particular room. A coverage estimate for a device cannot guarantee the same result in your floor plan.

Check the problem before blaming placement

Note which rooms are affected and whether the problem appears on several devices or just one. If every device loses service, check whether the internet connection or provider is down; if only one device struggles, investigate that device as well. This quick distinction helps avoid spending money on coverage equipment for a problem it cannot solve.

  1. Identify the affected rooms and devices.
  2. Move the router to a more open, elevated position that serves those rooms.
  3. Retest with the same devices in the same locations.
  4. If the weak area remains, assess any mesh point or extender serving it before adding hardware.

Why a mesh upgrade can fail

Mesh adds coverage points, but those points still need a usable connection to the primary router or to another point. If a satellite is placed where it receives a weak signal, it may simply extend a weak connection into the dead zone. Google’s mesh test guidance recommends moving a weakly connected point closer to the router or primary Wifi point and placing it between the poor-coverage area and its nearest point.

Use the system’s app to check the connection between points if it offers a mesh or connection test; the label and available checks vary by product. Move a weak point closer to its upstream point, keep it in an open location, and retest. A useful location is a compromise: close enough for a solid link to the network, yet positioned to serve the room that needs coverage.

When additional equipment makes sense

Try relocation first. Add equipment only if important areas remain poorly served after checking the router and existing points. The choice depends on whether you need coordinated whole-home coverage, a localized fix, or a more reliable link between nodes.

Option Best fit What to check
Move the router Weak coverage caused or worsened by a cabinet, low position, corner, or obstructed route Retest the same rooms and devices after each move
Add or reposition a mesh point Several areas need coverage from a coordinated system The point must have a usable connection to the primary unit or another point; confirm exact compatibility
Ethernet backhaul A supported mesh system has a practical cable route between units Check that the exact hardware supports it and that a wired connection is feasible
Range extender A localized gap can be served from a spot that still receives a strong router signal Do not place it in the dead zone where the router signal is already unusable
Ethernet-connected access point Wireless distance or obstacles prevent a stable link, but Ethernet can reach the coverage area Confirm that the equipment supports access-point mode

Wireless or Ethernet backhaul?

Wireless backhaul avoids running a cable, but it depends on a good radio connection between mesh points. If a system supports Ethernet backhaul and wiring is practical, it can avoid relying on a marginal wireless hop. TP-Link says that, for Deco units, Ethernet backhaul provides “a more stable and faster connection than a wireless backhaul” in its Deco placement guide. That is manufacturer guidance for Deco, not a guarantee of a particular speed improvement for every brand or home.

  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.

Check the ports and backhaul instructions for your exact hardware before planning a cable run. The required cable type and suitable route depend on the equipment and installation; the guidance does not establish one cable category as necessary for every setup.

Check compatibility before buying a mesh node

Do not assume that points from different generations or product families will work together. Google’s Google Wifi and Nest Wifi compatibility guidance describes specific mixing limitations, including that Nest Wifi Pro is not compatible with older Google Wifi or Nest Wifi points. Those are Google-specific rules, not a universal compatibility rule for other mesh brands. Verify the exact model and generation with its manufacturer before purchasing an extra node.

When an extender or access point is the better fit

A range extender can suit a localized gap, but it needs to be placed where it still receives a strong signal from the router. Putting it in the room where the router signal is already unusable leaves it with a poor connection to extend. TP-Link’s range extender placement guidance covers positioning and describes Ethernet-connected access-point mode as an option when wireless distance or obstacles prevent a stable connection. Confirm that your particular model supports that mode.

For persistent coverage problems, work through the options in order: improve the router’s location, correct any weak mesh links, then decide whether a compatible additional point, a wired backhaul, or a localized access point fits the layout. Manufacturer support pages provide practical setup guidance, but they are not independent performance comparisons, and results vary by home and equipment.
