A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor diode that emits light when electric current flows through it in the forward direction. At its junction, electrons and holes recombine and release energy as photons; the semiconductor’s properties determine whether that radiation is ultraviolet, visible, or infrared.
What is a light-emitting diode?
An LED is a type of diode: an electronic component made from a p-n junction between p-type and n-type semiconductor regions. The Illuminating Engineering Society defines it as “a p-n junction semiconductor device that emits incoherent optical radiation when forward biased” (IES definition 6.8).
“Forward biased” means that voltage is applied in the direction that allows current to flow through the junction. The defining feature is not simply that a device uses electricity to make light; it is that light is produced by a semiconductor junction through electroluminescence.
How does an LED produce light?
- Current drives carriers toward the junction. In a forward-biased LED, electrons from the n-type region and holes from the p-type region move into the junction area.
- Electrons and holes recombine. When an electron fills a hole, it moves to a lower energy state.
- The energy is released as photons. In an LED’s semiconductor material, this energy is emitted as optical radiation. The IUPAC Gold Book identifies the process as electroluminescence (IUPAC definition).
The energy difference, or band gap, of the semiconductor determines the energy and wavelength of the emitted photons. That is why LEDs can emit ultraviolet, visible, or infrared radiation rather than only the colors people can see (IUPAC; IES). Toshiba notes that ordinary silicon diodes are not efficient light emitters: their recombination energy is mainly released as heat rather than light (Toshiba explanation of diode operation).

What does “LED” mean in lighting products?
In a circuit, an LED can mean the semiconductor component itself. In everyday use, “LED” often refers to a bulb, lamp, or fixture built around one or more LED sources. A complete lighting product also needs electrical and thermal design to operate the sources; heat sinks, for example, help dissipate heat (ENERGY STAR: Learn About LED Lighting).
LED lighting is associated with reduced energy use compared with incandescent lighting, but the specific result depends on the products and conditions being compared. ENERGY STAR says LED lighting products produce light up to 90% more efficiently than incandescent bulbs; this is a broad consumer-facing comparison, not a guarantee for every LED or use case (ENERGY STAR).

- FUNCTIONALITY: These long-lasting, energy efficient LED light bulbs are ideal in family rooms, kitchens, bathrooms, and in commercial spaces such as retail, hospitality and entertainment industries. With a color rendering of 80 CRI.
- DESIGN: These non-dimmable LED light bulbs have a color temperature of 2700 kelvin, which produces a soft white color rendering ideal for productivity and welcoming spaces.
Where are LEDs used?
Visible-light LEDs are used in general lighting and in indicator lights, electronic signs, clock displays, and flashlights. LEDs that emit ultraviolet light also serve specialized technical uses, including curing applications (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; ENERGY STAR). The term therefore covers more than household bulbs and more than visible-light sources.
What does LED lifetime mean?
LED lighting products are often described in terms of gradual dimming, or lumen depreciation, rather than an abrupt moment when the source stops working. ENERGY STAR describes product lifetime using the point at which light output has fallen by 30%. That criterion applies in the context of its LED lighting guidance; it should not be assumed to define the lifetime of every LED device (ENERGY STAR).

How is an LED different from an OLED?
A conventional LED uses an inorganic semiconductor p-n junction to produce light. An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) instead uses organic materials, such as small molecules or polymers, in its light-emitting structure. Both involve electrically generated light, but “LED” in the standard semiconductor definition refers to the p-n junction device described above (IUPAC Gold Book).
