Shared video memory is regular system RAM that a graphics processor can use. It is not extra physical VRAM: a computer may show shared memory alongside a graphics card’s dedicated video memory, while integrated graphics commonly rely on system memory for graphics work.
What shared video memory means in Windows
Windows reports graphics memory in separate categories: dedicated video memory, dedicated system memory, and shared system memory. Microsoft defines shared system memory as system memory that can be shared with the GPU. Its reported maximum is a limit, not a statement that the full amount is currently allocated or constantly unavailable to other programs. The live amount used depends on the GPU, driver, workload, and system.
Windows calculates maximum shared system memory from graphics-available system memory minus dedicated system memory, subject to aperture and driver commit limits. Its reported total video memory adds dedicated video memory, dedicated system memory, and shared system memory. That combined figure is not the same as a discrete graphics card’s physical VRAM. See Microsoft’s graphics-memory calculation and GPU segment definitions.
Shared memory and dedicated video memory compared
| Category | Physical source | What the Windows figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Shared system memory | Main system RAM | System memory available to the GPU under Windows’ reporting and driver limits; the maximum is not necessarily current use. |
| Dedicated video memory | Memory dedicated to the GPU, such as VRAM on a discrete card | Memory segments not populated from system memory. On integrated graphics, firmware- or driver-reserved system memory may be reported separately as dedicated system memory. |
Microsoft’s Task Manager explanation describes these reporting categories. Steam also uses the term “shared video memory” in its performance monitor documentation.

How integrated and discrete graphics use memory
Integrated graphics
Integrated graphics commonly use system RAM because the graphics hardware does not have a separate graphics-memory bank. Intel says its integrated processor graphics use system memory for graphics workloads with help from the driver and operating system. Some systems reserve a portion of system DRAM for graphics; Windows may report that as dedicated system memory. The exact arrangement varies by device. See Intel’s explanation of graphics memory on Windows.
Discrete graphics
A discrete GPU has dedicated graphics memory on the card. Windows may also report shared system memory available to that GPU. Keep the categories distinct: shared memory is system RAM, not an extension of the card’s physical VRAM. Microsoft describes integrated graphics as generally more power-efficient and less powerful than discrete graphics, while discrete graphics are suited to heavier graphics work; that is broad guidance, not a guarantee for every GPU or task. See Microsoft’s GPU overview.

How to interpret a shared GPU memory number
- A large shared-memory maximum tells you how much system memory Windows may make available to the GPU under its memory-management rules; it does not mean that amount is permanently taken from ordinary system use.
- Do not add shared memory to a discrete GPU’s dedicated video memory and call the result “VRAM.” Windows’ total video-memory figure combines distinct categories.
- The shared-memory maximum alone does not establish graphics performance. The sources define different memory categories and arrangements, but do not provide a universal speed ratio or performance conversion between shared memory and VRAM.
- Allocation and reporting vary by device, firmware, GPU, and driver. There is no universal setting that lets every user change the shared-memory amount.
