Radio frequency identification (RFID) is a family of technologies that uses radio-frequency fields or waves to identify tagged objects automatically. In a typical system, a reader sends a signal to a tag and receives the tag’s digital data, often an identifier. Unlike a barcode scan, RFID does not inherently require optical line of sight.
How an RFID system works
An RFID system has tags and a reader, also called an interrogator. The reader communicates with a tag over radio frequency, then converts the response into digital data for software or another system to use. A tag commonly carries an identifier; how much else it can provide depends on the technology and application.
- The reader sends a signal. It creates or transmits a radio-frequency field or wave suited to its tag type and frequency band.
- The tag responds. A passive tag uses energy from the reader’s field and reflects a modulated signal back. An active tag sends a signal using its own transmitter.
- The reader captures the data. The reader decodes the response, which may then be used to identify or track an object or support another business process.
In the GS1 system, an Electronic Product Code (EPC) is an identifier syntax for physical objects, unit loads, locations, and other entities relevant to business operations. GS1’s EPC Tag Data Standard specifies EPC formats and encodings. GS1’s RFID overview describes the role of EPC in its standards.
Passive, battery-assisted passive, and active tags
The first practical distinction is how a tag gets power and sends its response. These categories differ in communication method, not just in battery life.

| Tag type | Power and communication | Typical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Passive | Has no radio transmitter and normally no power source of its own. It harvests energy from the reader’s field and returns data by backscatter. | Its response depends on a reader’s field being present. |
| Battery-assisted passive | Uses a power source to run circuitry or sensors, but communicates by backscatter rather than transmitting its own radio signal. | Combines battery-supported functions with a backscatter reply. |
| Active | Has a power source, commonly a battery, and a transmitter that can broadcast its own signal. | Some real-time location systems use active tags that transmit at intervals for readers and software to process. |
GS1 explains passive and active tag operation in its RFID system overview and its explanation of the difference between passive and active tags.
RFID frequency bands and compatibility
RFID is not one radio system with one universal reader. Low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and ultra-high frequency (UHF) systems serve different requirements. NFC is among the commonly used HF-related technologies, while RAIN RFID is passive UHF. GS1’s standards focus on passive HF and UHF, and passive UHF RAIN tags are broadly implemented in its industries.

- Smart Card Reader: This rfid copier can read many types of cards, including T5577, S50, S70, TK4100, EM4100, EM4200, TK4100-D, TK4168, HID ProxCard II, AWID, Paradox and other common cards on the market. If you aren't sure your card whether can be used or the device can not read your card, please contact us
- App connection: You can use the App to operate or decode through a computer or mobile phone, and upgrade the App for free(Notice: when the computer identifies it as malware, you should exit the computer's protection software)
- NFC Simulation: Independent NFC simulation function, allowing devices with NFC function to simulate encrypted IC cards with one button. Also, You can directly enter the card number to be written by key, which is convenient and fast
- Communication Interface: The card reader is with low power consumption in standby mode and supports Type-C comm, making it convenient and practical. And the rfid copier is with 2.8-inch TFT color screen, which can display various card information more intuitively
Frequency and protocol matter when choosing equipment. GS1 specifications describe distinct HF and UHF air interfaces, including UHF EPC/RFID around 860–960 MHz and HF EPC/RFID at 13.56 MHz. Those figures describe the cited standards, not a complete guide to radio-frequency allocations in every country. A reader and tag must support compatible frequencies and protocols; an RFID reader should not be assumed to work with every RFID tag. See GS1’s frequency explainer and its General Specifications v24.0.0.
Read range and line of sight
RFID can capture data without optical line of sight, but read distance and performance depend on the tag type and the particular system. GS1 says unique EPCs on RAIN RFID tags can be captured at high rates and at distances well in excess of 10 metres without line-of-sight contact. This is a capability statement about RAIN RFID, not a range guarantee for every RFID installation. GS1’s RFID page gives that specific description.

What RFID is used for—and what to consider
RFID can support asset management and tracking, access control, and automated payment, among other applications. The right configuration depends on the business process: tag type, frequency, reader, software, and deployment conditions can all differ. NIST’s 2007 overview, updated in 2017, emphasizes that components and customizations vary and that security risks and available controls therefore vary by system. It is useful background, not a complete account of every current threat or control. See NIST’s overview of RFID security.
There is also a specific health-related consideration: the FDA says potential interference with pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs), and other electronic medical devices merits attention. Its page describes ongoing work to understand where RFID is used, what frequencies and power levels are involved, and how potential electromagnetic interference may be mitigated. This does not mean that every RFID installation causes interference or quantify the risk for a particular device or setting. See the FDA’s RFID information.
