Gitea 1.26 introduced Actions concurrency groups, workflow dependency graphs, and security fixes—but the release series did not stop at 1.26.0. Gitea’s June 21, 2026 recommendation was to upgrade 1.26 installations directly to 1.26.4. As of October 4, 2026, newer release lines have since appeared, so 1.26 is not the current Gitea release.
What changed in Gitea 1.26?
Gitea 1.26.0 was announced on April 18, 2026. Its headline changes span Actions workflow controls and visibility, alongside security fixes and other improvements.
Actions concurrency and workflow graphs
Workflows can now use the Actions concurrency syntax to group related runs and have new runs cancel or wait behind in-flight work. The release also added workflow dependency visualization and graph refresh in the run view, making relationships between jobs easier to inspect.
More Actions changes
Gitea 1.26.0 also added support for using actions and reusable workflows from private repositories, configurable permissions for automatically generated Actions tokens, and rerunning failed jobs. The release announcement also listed automatic release-note generation among its improvements. See the Gitea 1.26.0 release announcement for the complete list.

Fixes in 1.26.0
The initial release announcement listed three CVEs: CVE-2026-28737, a stored cross-site scripting issue in the 3D file viewer; CVE-2026-22555, an organization-secret exposure through an API fork flow; and CVE-2026-27780, a branch-protection bypass. These were part of the 1.26.0 release, not a substitute for the fixes added in later patches.
Additional fixes in 1.26.2, 1.26.3, and 1.26.4
Gitea 1.26.2, announced May 20, included security and bug fixes, including token-scope enforcement and changes to Actions artifact signatures. Its announcement recommended upgrading.
Rank #2
The June 20 release of 1.26.3 addressed further security issues. Among them were a Docker default that could allow any source IP to impersonate a user through the X-WEBAUTH-USER header, tightened host filtering against SSRF, enforcement of organization visibility for private labels, blocked redirects during repository migration clones, bounded CODEOWNERS pattern matching, and redaction of notification subjects after access is revoked.
Gitea 1.26.4 followed on June 21. It fixed a repository code-page regression introduced in 1.26.3 and prevented disabled users from being automatically reactivated during OAuth2 sign-in callbacks. In its 1.26.3 and 1.26.4 announcement, the project said it strongly recommended upgrading directly to 1.26.4, and urged users already on 1.26.3 to upgrade as soon as possible.

What should maintainers check before upgrading?
Review fork pull request approvals
Gitea 1.26.3 changed fork pull request approval behavior: a pull request from a fork must be merged before it can bypass the approval gate. If your team relied on the previous behavior, review your workflow approval settings and confirm that the new gate matches your process.
Back up before replacing the installation
The Gitea 1.26.0 announcement advises backing up data before upgrading, then replacing the binary or Docker container and restarting. Administrators should follow the upgrade and installation guidance appropriate to their deployment rather than assume every installation method has identical steps. The release post’s upgrade instructions direct users to pre-built binaries or Docker and the Gitea installation documentation.

If you are already on the 1.26 branch, the project’s June 21 guidance was to move directly to 1.26.4, not remain on 1.26.0 or 1.26.3. That recommendation reflects the 1.26 patches available at the time; the 1.26.4 announcement does not establish that it is the right target for every upgrade today.
For a new upgrade decision, check Gitea’s current supported release and security guidance. Gitea announced 1.27.0 on July 12, 2026, and 28.0.0 on September 30, 2026, so 1.26 should be understood as a release-series story rather than the newest version. The relevant release announcements are Gitea 1.27.0 and Gitea 28.0.0.
