There is no verified, current seven-provider ranking to recommend here. Telegram’s official guidance does, however, explain the two proxy types Telegram Desktop supports, how to configure them, and what a proxy operator can learn. For most readers, the practical choice is a trusted SOCKS5 or MTProto proxy that works on their network—not a provider label or an unsupported “best” claim.
What a Telegram proxy does—and what it does not do
A proxy routes Telegram traffic through an intermediary server. This can help connect when direct access is unavailable or unreliable, but it means the proxy operator becomes part of the connection path. Telegram supports SOCKS5 and MTProto proxies; neither should be treated as a guarantee of speed, availability, or anonymity. Telegram’s MTProxy documentation describes the supported options and their use.
Telegram says MTProxy obfuscates Telegram traffic while Telegram traffic remains encrypted. That does not make the operator invisible to the connection: an operator may see your IP address and collect metadata such as connection times and the fact that you are connecting to Telegram. Telegram says the operator cannot read Telegram messages or identify your account, but advises using a proxy source you trust.
MTProto vs. SOCKS5 for Telegram Desktop
| Proxy type | Details Telegram Desktop asks for | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| SOCKS5 | Server and port; username and password may also be required. | A general proxy protocol supported by Telegram. The operator supplies connection details. |
| MTProto | Server, port, and secret. | Telegram’s proxy protocol; Telegram says it routes and obfuscates Telegram traffic while the traffic remains encrypted. |
Protocol alone does not tell you which option will be faster or more reliable. Those depend on the particular server, your location and network, and the operator. Choose based on whether the details come from a source you trust and whether the connection works reliably for you.
How to add a proxy in Telegram Desktop
- Open Telegram Desktop and go to Settings > Advanced > Connection Type. Interface wording can change between app versions.
- Choose the proxy type offered by your trusted source: SOCKS5 or MTProto.
- Enter the server and port. For SOCKS5, enter the username and password if the operator provided them; for MTProto, enter the secret.
- Save or apply the settings, then check whether Telegram connects. If it does not, verify the server, port, secret or credentials with the source that supplied them.
Telegram says proxy managers may publish connection details, but recommends using only a source you trust or asking a friend to set one up. A proxy appearing in Telegram’s list or promoting a channel in the chat list is not proof that its operator is trustworthy.
Should you enable Auto-Switch Proxies?
Telegram Desktop offers an Auto-Switch Proxies setting that can move to another saved proxy if the current one disconnects. It can help maintain continuity when you have multiple proxies configured, but it does not verify that any proxy is safe, fast, or consistently available. Save only alternatives whose operators you trust.
Rank #2
Can a Telegram proxy read your messages?
Telegram states that an MTProxy node and its operator cannot read Telegram messages or identify your account because Telegram traffic is encrypted. However, the operator may observe the connecting IP and collect metadata, including connection times and the fact that you are using Telegram. Treat the proxy operator as someone who can learn about your connection, even if the operator cannot read message contents.
A proxy does not change Telegram’s chat encryption mode. Telegram’s FAQ distinguishes Cloud Chats, which use server-client encryption and sync through Telegram’s cloud, from Secret Chats, which add client-to-client end-to-end encryption and are specific to the devices in the chat. For sensitive conversations, Telegram recommends Secret Chats, along with 2-Step Verification and an app passcode.

When a VPN may be a better fit
A proxy generally routes selected application traffic; a VPN usually routes and encrypts traffic from the device. If your concern is broader than Telegram routing, a trusted VPN may better match that device-level need. Telegram says users who expect advanced surveillance may consider layering a trusted VPN with MTProxy. This is not a guarantee of anonymity, and it does not make an untrusted proxy operator trustworthy.

No named provider has been established here as a verified, current choice among seven comparable options. Before relying on any service, check the same practical criteria rather than assuming a protocol name or marketing claim proves quality:
Rank #4
- Compatibility: Does it provide SOCKS5 or MTProto details that Telegram Desktop accepts?
- Connection performance: Does it connect on your network and in your region? Stability and latency claims are meaningful only with a disclosed test method, location, and date.
- Operator and privacy: Can you identify who runs it, and are its logging and privacy statements clear?
- Limits and terms: Are account or traffic limits, price, support, and cancellation terms stated clearly?
Do not infer speed from the proxy protocol or trustworthiness from a channel promotion. For connection details, prefer an operator or person you already trust.
