Apply WCAG 2.2 to the web content and interactions in your game, then use game-specific accessibility guidance and player feedback to find barriers that web standards alone may not address. WCAG provides testable criteria for web content; it does not prescribe one universal set of features for every game or guarantee that every player can play.

What WCAG covers in a game

WCAG 2.2 is a W3C Recommendation for web content. Its success criteria are testable and technology-neutral, and WCAG 2.2 extends WCAG 2.1 while remaining backward compatible with it. The W3C advises using the current version for web accessibility work. The Recommendation was published on 12 December 2024.

For a browser game, evaluate the actual content, interface, technologies and tasks players use. Menus, account forms, instructions, help pages, embedded video and gameplay controls can raise different accessibility issues. Apply the relevant criteria to the content and interactions in scope; do not assume that every criterion applies identically to every mechanic.

WCAG is not a complete inventory of human needs, and conformance alone does not establish that a game is accessible to everyone. Nor does this article settle legal obligations for a particular game, platform or jurisdiction. Those depend on the product and applicable law.

How to assess a web game against WCAG

Start with player tasks, then inspect the controls and information each task requires. Use the success criteria as the basis for any conformance assessment; the W3C’s WCAG 2.2 Techniques offer examples of possible ways to meet criteria, but techniques are supporting guidance rather than substitutes for the criteria.

  1. Map the experience. List the pages, menus, overlays, media and gameplay actions players need to reach and use. Include account setup, settings, pausing, help and error recovery where they are part of the web experience.
  2. Check input and navigation. Where applicable, verify that functionality can be operated by keyboard, focus is visible and understandable, and users can leave every component without becoming trapped. Check whether a task depends on dragging or multipoint gestures and whether an alternative is available where required.
  3. Check controls and information. Ensure controls have accessible names and non-text content has appropriate text alternatives. Do not communicate a state, warning or action through color alone.
  4. Check media and sensory demands. Where media criteria apply, review captions and audio description or a media alternative. Captions should include relevant non-speech audio as well as speech. Also assess contrast, text presentation, timing, motion or flashing, and whether audio can be controlled independently where applicable.
  5. Document the scope of any conformance claim. Identify the WCAG version and URI, conformance level, date and pages or content covered. Do not describe an untested game as “WCAG compliant” based only on a list of features.

WCAG checks and game-specific design guidance

Some accessibility choices are directly relevant to WCAG criteria for web content; others are valuable game-design recommendations without being universal WCAG requirements. Treat both as part of accessibility work, but keep the distinction clear.

Area WCAG-oriented review Game-specific design options
Input and controls Check applicable keyboard operation, escape from keyboard traps, visible focus, control names and alternatives to gestures such as dragging when required. Consider remappable buttons, alternative controllers, simplified control schemes and options that reduce precision or simultaneous-input demands.
Gameplay information Provide text alternatives for relevant non-text content and ensure color is not the only means of conveying information. Consider presenting important cues through more than one suitable channel, such as visual, audio or text cues.
Audio and video Meet applicable media requirements, including captions for prerecorded synchronized media and audio description or an alternative where required. Consider sound alternatives for gameplay information and separate controls for music, effects and dialogue.
Presentation and challenge Review applicable requirements for contrast, text presentation, timing, focus and motion or flashing. Where the design permits, offer adjustments to visibility, timing, speed or challenge so players can choose an experience that works for them.

These game-specific options are recommended in the IGDA Game Accessibility SIG Guidelines; they should not be presented as though every item were itself a WCAG success criterion. Select options in light of the mechanics and the barriers they create.

Why a game may need more than a WCAG checklist

Gameplay can ask players to make precise, timed or simultaneous inputs while interpreting busy visual or audio information. A website-focused standard cannot by itself decide whether a particular mechanic’s demands are reasonable or identify every adjustment that would make play possible.

A 2018 W3C Web Games Workshop position paper describes these game-specific demands and discusses adaptation and multimodal output. It is conceptual context, not the current normative standard. As the paper puts it, “So there is no fixed bar of ‘reasonably accessible’, as what’s reasonable is specific to each game.” The implication is not that teams can skip accessibility requirements; it is that standards conformance and thoughtful adaptation answer different questions.

Use player-centered patterns to find gameplay barriers

Accessible Player Experiences (APX), from the AbleGamers Foundation, is a barrier-focused design-pattern framework informed by player feedback. Its page describes 22 patterns divided into Access and Challenge, and recommends prioritizing Access when resources are limited. The count describes framework patterns, not a population statistic or a measured accessibility outcome.

Hasbro Gaming Connect 4 Strategy Board Game for Ages 6 and Up (Amazon Exclusive)
  • Add a blue disc to block opponents and lift discs higher
  • Features blue Blocker Disc: This game includes blue Blocker Disc that open doors to new strategies
  • Features blue Blocker Dics: this game includes blue Blocker Dics that open doors to new strategies

APX gives teams a way to examine barriers across controls, presentation, mechanics and challenge. The framework treats options as a way to let players fine-tune their experience—not automatically as a removal of challenge. An adjustment can make a game playable for someone while leaving the intended challenge intact for another player.

When time or resources are constrained, identify access barriers that prevent players from reaching or understanding the game before prioritizing optional challenge adjustments. Involve disabled players in evaluating whether the options work in practice; a setting’s presence alone does not show that it solves the barrier.

Questions to guide implementation choices

  • Input flexibility: Can players remap actions, use an alternative controller, simplify simultaneous inputs or avoid a precision-dependent gesture?
  • Information channels: Is essential gameplay information available in a form players can perceive, rather than relying on sound, color or a single visual cue alone?
  • Player control: Can players adjust text, contrast, audio mix, timing, speed or challenge where those changes are compatible with the game?
  • Evidence: Are you verifying a specific WCAG criterion for web content, or using game-specific patterns to discover gameplay barriers? Record those as complementary efforts, not interchangeable claims.
