8tracks reported on June 27, 2017, that a copy of its user database had leaked. According to the company, email addresses and hashed passwords for people who signed up with an email address were included; passwords used to sign in through Google or Facebook were not affected by this leak. If you reused your 8tracks password elsewhere, change it on every other account where it was used. The notice is historical and does not verify whether 8tracks currently operates or offers a password-reset flow.
What did the 8tracks breach expose?
In its June 27, 2017 security alert, 8tracks said it had received credible reports that a copy of its user database had leaked. The company said that database included email addresses and hashed, salted passwords for users who registered with email. It said authentication passwords for people who signed in through Google or Facebook were not affected by this leak. That distinction is about the password data described in the notice; it does not establish that those users faced no other account-security risk.
8tracks said it did not store sensitive information such as credit-card numbers, phone numbers, or street addresses. That is the company’s account of the data it held, not an independent verification. Mozilla Monitor lists the breach date as June 27, 2017, and says the record was added to its database on February 16, 2018. It lists email addresses and passwords among the compromised data classes and attributes the breach data to Have I Been Pwned. Mozilla Monitor’s 8tracks breach entry.
Does hashed and salted mean your password was safe?
No. Hashing and salting are protections that make stored passwords different from readable plaintext, but the 8tracks alert still advised affected users to change their password. A leaked password hash may be at risk of guessing or cracking, and a password reused on another service can put that other account at risk if the password is known or recovered. The practical advice is to replace reused credentials rather than assume the storage method made them harmless.

What should you do now?
- Replace any reused password. Change it on every account where you used the same 8tracks password. Start with email, identity-provider, financial, and work accounts, since access to those can help an attacker reach other services. Use a different, unique password for each account.
- Secure recovery and identity accounts. Review the recovery email addresses and phone numbers on important accounts, check for unfamiliar signed-in sessions and end any you do not recognize, and enable multifactor authentication where available. Have I Been Pwned’s security resources provide general guidance on securing recovery accounts, ending unknown sessions, replacing reused passwords, and strengthening MFA.
- Check 8tracks only through a trusted route. If you can still access the service, use its official account interface or a bookmark you already trust. The 2017 alert does not confirm a current reset page or current service status, so do not rely on an unverified reset link.
- Use unique credentials going forward. 8tracks recommended avoiding password reuse, using two-factor authentication, and using a password manager. A manager can help generate and keep distinct passwords for each service.
What did 8tracks say about the incident response?
In its notice, 8tracks said it believed the attack vector involved an employee’s GitHub account that did not have two-factor authentication and access to a system containing a database backup. The company said it secured that account, changed storage-system passwords, added access logging, and took steps involving two-step authentication and repository access. These are the company’s descriptions of its response, not independently verified forensic findings. The notice is dated June 27, 2017, and the page also displays June 28, 2017.

The cited incident accounts describe affected data types and sign-in methods; they do not provide a way to determine whether a particular reader’s 8tracks account was in the leaked copy. They also do not establish that every 8tracks user was affected. If you used an email-and-password sign-in, or reused that password elsewhere, act on the possibility of exposure by changing reused credentials and securing important accounts.
