In 2002, Inprocomm’s IPC2120 was presented as an 802.11b baseband and media-access-control (MAC) chip that implemented many wireless functions in hardware rather than using an on-chip ARM processor. The chip was not a complete Wi-Fi adapter or access point: it relied on a host system’s CPU for firmware duties. Inprocomm said this design could reduce size and power, but the reported advantages were company claims, not the results of independent comparative testing.

What does it mean to hardwire 802.11b baseband functions?

A baseband chip handles the signal-processing and protocol work needed to move wireless data. To “hardwire” functions means implementing them in dedicated logic rather than running them as software on a processor integrated into the chip. Inprocomm’s IPC2120 combined 802.11b baseband and MAC functions, while leaving an ARM processor off-chip and shifting firmware tasks—including the base 802.11b protocol—to the host CPU, according to EE Times’ December 2, 2002 report.

The reported data path ran from a modem section to a protocol access unit (PAU), then through FIFOs before output over mini-PCI or CardBus. That describes a component intended to work within a larger wireless system, not a standalone network device.

How did the IPC2120’s architecture trade hardware for host work?

Dedicated logic can perform defined WLAN tasks without keeping a general-purpose processor on the chip. But when the processor is omitted, the host system must take on firmware work. The IPC2120 therefore moved some processing responsibility from the wireless chip to the computer or other host that used it.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Craig Conkling, Inprocomm’s director of marketing and product development, told EE Times that the host processing load would be insignificant on many contemporary processor architectures. The report provides no independent measurements to establish that workload or to compare the IPC2120 with processor-based alternatives. A meaningful comparison would need to consider firmware location and flexibility, host CPU use, chip and package size, power, security implementation, and host interface—not just whether functions were implemented in hardware.

What benefits and specifications did Inprocomm report?

EE Times relayed the following figures and expectations from the 2002 launch report. They should be read as reported product information and company estimates, not independent test results.

Die-size reduction “maybe by 40 percent or more” Conkling’s estimate; not an independently verified measurement.
Package 128 pins Reported for the IPC2120 by EE Times.
Worst-case transmit current 50 mA Reported as Conkling’s claim; the article does not provide independent test conditions or measurements.
Worst-case receive current 135 to 140 mA Reported as Conkling’s claim; the article does not provide independent test conditions or measurements.
Chip-set bill of materials Expected to be under $18 Conkling’s forecast in 2002, not a verified retail price.

Conkling summed up the power rationale this way: “We don’t have to keep the entire chip powered up all the time.” That is an attributed explanation of the design’s intended benefit, not proof of a measured advantage over another chip.

What did the report say about security?

The launch-era report said the IPC2120 included 64- and 128-bit WEP, TKIP, and AES. It also noted that IEEE 802.11i was still in development and quoted Conkling’s expectation that any AES changes would be minor. These are historical claims about a 2002 design; they do not establish that the chip provides security suitable for current Wi-Fi networks.

The standards context has since changed: IEEE SA marks both IEEE 802.11b-1999 and its 2001 corrigendum as superseded. IEEE describes 802.11b as a higher-speed physical-layer extension for the 2.4 GHz band. The IEEE timeline places 802.11i in the subsequent development of MAC security enhancements: IEEE 802.11 timelines.

Did the IPC2120 reach production?

EE Times reported that sampling was slated for December 15, 2002, with full production planned for January 2003. Those dates were prospective when published; the report itself does not verify that either milestone occurred. It also does not establish current stock, support, or a present-day source for the chip.
