A QR code link is a web address encoded in a QR code. When a phone scans the code, it can open the associated online destination. The QR symbol is the carrier; the URL is the address it represents. That address may lead straight to a webpage or pass through a redirect before reaching its final destination.
What is a QR code link?
A QR code link is a URL represented by the data in a QR code. A camera or QR reader scans the symbol, reads the address, and gives the user the option to open it. GS1 puts the distinction simply: “In the QR code itself is a URL.” (GS1 support guidance, modified January 8, 2025.)
The code and the link are not the same thing. The QR code is the scannable pattern printed or displayed on a surface; the URL is the web address stored in that pattern. A QR code can also encode data other than a URL, but when people say “QR code link,” they usually mean a code that opens an online destination.

How does a QR code link work?
- The URL is encoded: A QR code is created with a web address as its data.
- A reader scans the symbol: A phone camera or compatible QR reader decodes the pattern and displays the address or an option to open it.
- The browser requests the address: The address may serve the page directly or forward the request through a redirect to another destination.
With a direct URL, the QR code contains the address of the intended page. If that page is removed or its address changes, the printed code may stop working unless the old address still redirects visitors.

Direct URLs and redirects: what is the difference?
A direct URL points to the destination itself. A redirecting URL first receives the scan and then forwards the visitor elsewhere. That extra step can let the operator change the destination without replacing the QR code on a package or sign.
GS1 describes the benefit this way: “Redirection is essential for keeping the QR code static while allowing the linked information to be updated or changed.” (GS1 support guidance, modified February 6, 2025.) The flexibility depends on the redirect address and its service remaining active and correctly configured. A printed code does not update itself: someone must maintain the routing and the destination content.

What is GS1 Digital Link?
GS1 Digital Link is a standardized way to represent GS1 identifiers, such as product identifiers, in a web-compatible URI. That URI can function as a web address and can be encoded in a QR code. A resolver can use the identifier and its configured links to direct a request to relevant online information or services.
Unlike a simple QR code containing one page address, a Digital Link can connect an identifier to different related resources, depending on its setup and the request. For a product, those resources might include product details, instructions, traceability information, or other services. The identifier and URI provide a structured basis for those links; the resolver and its configuration determine what is actually returned.

Are QR code links safe to open?
A QR code is not a safety check: it can encode an ordinary URL, including one that leads somewhere unexpected. Treat a scanned address with the same care as a link received in an email or text. Before opening it, inspect the URL shown by your device and consider whether the code’s source is trustworthy. Do not install unexpected software just because a page reached through a QR code asks you to.
GS1 likewise advises applying ordinary online-safety rules to links obtained through QR codes (GS1 safety guidance).
Where are QR code links used?
Businesses can print QR codes on product packaging, labels, signs, or other surfaces to connect people with online resources. On packaging, a code may lead to product information, instructions, traceability details, promotions, or services. GS1’s packaging guidance describes how a Digital Link and maintained redirection can let a company update linked information without reprinting the code (GS1 packaging guidance).
A printable label supplies a surface for the symbol; it does not create, host, or maintain the URL or redirect. Those depend on the web address and the service behind it.
