The QR Code is the patterned symbol; the sticker is simply one physical surface used to carry it. Depending on what the code contains, scanning it can reveal encoded data or open online information.
What a QR code sticker is
QR Codes are square symbols made from a grid of light and dark modules. GS1 describes the QR Code as a two-dimensional symbol and notes that it became an ISO/IEC standard in 2000. The word “sticker” refers to the adhesive label on which the symbol is printed, not to a separate QR-code format. GS1’s QR Code definition explains the symbol itself.
A sticker can put a code on an item or package, but the QR pattern can also be printed on other substrates. Not every adhesive or surface is necessarily suitable: placement, print quality, and the material can affect whether a scanner can read the symbol.
How scanning a QR code sticker works
A compatible phone camera or imaging scanner locates and reads the grid of modules. Finder patterns help the reader detect and orient the symbol. QR Codes also use Reed-Solomon error correction, which can help recover information from a partially damaged symbol, according to GS1’s General Specifications.

Error correction is not a guarantee that a damaged or poorly printed sticker will scan. Severe wear, glare, unsuitable placement, or other degradation can still prevent a successful read.
What a QR code sticker can do
The scan result depends on the information encoded and how the code is implemented. A code may contain data directly or provide a link to online material. For products and packaging, GS1 describes uses such as sharing sourcing details, ingredients, allergen and nutrition information, recycling guidance, recipes, and instructions. A GS1 implementation can also use defined data structures for identifiers and attributes; it must follow the applicable GS1 standards.

GS1 Ireland publishes capacities of up to 7,089 numeric characters or 4,296 alphanumeric characters for the described QR Code. These are published code capacities, not a guarantee that a particular encoding or printed sticker will scan reliably at that length. GS1 Ireland’s QR Code overview provides those figures.
QR code stickers versus UPC and EAN barcodes
A QR Code is a two-dimensional symbol; UPC and EAN barcodes are linear symbols commonly used for retail identification. They are not automatically interchangeable. In the consumer-smartphone context described by GS1, a GS1 QR Code is intended for phone scanning and must be used alongside an EAN or UPC because it cannot be scanned at the typical retail point of sale. That limitation applies to the specified GS1 implementation and equipment context; it should not be generalized to every QR code or scanner setup. See GS1’s retail 2D barcode guidance.

Choosing and placing a QR code sticker
Before printing or applying a QR code sticker, consider what the code should deliver and how people will scan it:
- Content or destination: Decide whether the symbol should carry data directly or link to online information.
- Intended scanner: Confirm whether the code is for consumer phones or an imaging scanner used in a particular application.
- Application requirements: If using GS1 identifiers or data structures, follow the relevant GS1 application standards.
- Print and placement: Use a clear, readable print and a location where the symbol is not obstructed or prone to conditions that interfere with scanning.
- Sticker material: Check that the label and the surface it will be applied to suit the intended use; the QR Code format alone does not establish adhesive or surface compatibility.
GS1 US identifies DENSO as the QR Code’s inventor and gives 1994 as the year; GS1 says the code became an ISO/IEC standard in 2000. GS1 US’s 2D barcode overview gives the inventor and year.
