Yes—Windows 11 can use a linked Android phone’s camera as a camera source for PC applications, so it is worth checking compatibility before buying a webcam. Microsoft Support says the phone must run Android 10 or later and have Link to Windows version 1.24022.0 or later; the PC must run Windows 11 or later. Those requirements establish that the feature may work, not that every older phone is compatible or that its camera will match a dedicated webcam.
Check whether your phone qualifies
“Old” alone does not determine compatibility. Check the Android version and whether your phone can run the required Link to Windows version. Microsoft’s connected-camera requirements are:
- PC: Windows 11 or later.
- Android device: Android 10 or later.
- Link to Windows: version 1.24022.0 or later.
These are requirements for the connected-camera feature, not performance guarantees. Microsoft’s general Phone Link setup guidance also gives Android 10 or later as its floor, but the connected-camera feature has the additional Link to Windows version requirement. Pair the phone with Windows 11
If the phone is not already linked, keep it near the PC and connect both to the same Wi-Fi network. Use Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on Android. Microsoft documents QR-code pairing as well as a manual pairing option; follow the prompts shown by the apps. Pairing is separate from enabling the camera feature.

Enable the phone as a connected camera
- On the PC, open Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices.
- Add or select the linked Android device.
- Turn on Use as connected camera.
- Open the video-call or camera application and choose the phone from its camera dropdown or camera settings.
Microsoft says that, once enabled, the phone appears as an available camera in Windows and other camera applications. The specific controls and labels for choosing a camera vary by application. Microsoft’s instructions are in Use your mobile device’s camera and Manage Mobile devices in Windows.
If the selected camera shows no picture
- Check the permission prompt: Look at the video preview and for a taskbar window with a camera icon. Microsoft says this window can show the phone name and guide you through granting permission.
- Allow camera access for Link to Windows: Check the app’s camera permission in Android settings.
- Refresh the stream: If video does not resume after permission is granted, use the refresh button in the camera-icon window.
- Turn off the call app’s background effect: Microsoft notes that a background effect in the calling app can block the video; disable it to check whether the picture returns.

What this does—and does not—prove about skipping a webcam
The built-in feature can save you from buying a separate camera if your phone meets the requirements, your call application exposes it as a selectable camera, and the setup works for your needs. A stand, clamp, or compact tripod may help position the phone, but it is optional; Microsoft does not require or specify one.
Microsoft’s support material does not establish a measured comparison with dedicated webcams for image quality, latency, battery life, stability, or convenience. It also does not guarantee compatibility with every video-call application or document tests on every older handset. Check the camera preview in your actual call app and lighting before deciding whether the phone is an adequate substitute. The feature’s availability is established; an across-the-board webcam replacement is not.
