You can build a classroom-scale factory robot with LEGO SPIKE Prime: start with LEGO Education’s downloadable Package Sorter plans, which include a Brick Sorter Robot and base, or its Quality Check Robot. These models demonstrate the core automation loop—feed an object, detect it, choose an action in a program, move it, and check the result. They are educational prototypes, not industrial production machines.

What “industrial robot built out of LEGO” can mean

The phrase has two different interpretations. The practical DIY project is a LEGO model that imitates a factory task, such as sorting parts or checking packages. A separate research topic is a commercial industrial arm manipulating LEGO bricks with a specialized tool. The latter robot is not made from LEGO.

Approach What it is Best suited to
LEGO automation model A classroom-scale mechanism built from LEGO elements, motors, sensors, and code. Learning how sensing, decisions, and material handling work together.
Industrial robot handling LEGO A commercial robotic arm with purpose-built end-of-arm tooling, programmed to assemble or disassemble bricks. Studying research in robot manipulation, not building a LEGO-powered factory arm.

Which LEGO build should you start with?

Package sorter or quality-check robot

LEGO Education publishes SPIKE Prime building instructions for a Package Sorter, including a Brick Sorter Robot and base, as well as a Quality Check Robot. The official resource page is a useful starting point: SPIKE Prime building instructions. Check the instructions and bill of materials against the exact kit generation and contents you have; the page does not establish that every plan works with every set configuration.

Why SPIKE Prime fits the lesson

LEGO Education’s Competition Ready unit uses the SPIKE Prime Set to teach autonomous robotics with motors, sensors, and programs, and is aimed at grades 6–8. Its activities include using a color sensor to react to lines, controlling motors with sensors, building motorized tools, and organizing programs. The curriculum’s stated goal includes: “Write programs using the Color Sensor to make the Driving Base autonomous.” See the Competition Ready unit plan.

How a classroom sorter works

Think of the build as a small automation cell rather than just a robotic arm. Each stage has a job, and the stages must work together:

  1. Feed: Put pieces into a hopper or loading area.
  2. Space: Arrange the mechanism so pieces reach the sensor one at a time or with enough separation to identify them.
  3. Identify: Use a sensor to detect a property the build can act on, such as color.
  4. Decide: Write code that maps the sensor reading to a destination.
  5. Route: Use a motorized tool, gate, or other mechanism to send the piece to a bin.
  6. Check: Confirm that the piece reached the intended area, then reset the mechanism for the next one.

This sequence is a design framework, not a claim that every LEGO sorter uses the same hardware. Keep the first version simple: test detection and routing with a small number of categories, then add complexity only when the mechanism can reliably present and move the pieces.

What a more ambitious sorter concept adds

A 2021 Worcester Polytechnic Institute student project poster, “LEGO Sorting Robot for the Classroom,” describes a prototype concept with six conveyor belts to progressively separate parts, a camera and convolutional neural network to identify color and part number, and a three-axis Cartesian robot to place each identified part into a tray pocket. The poster calls system integration and improved recognition future work, so it should be understood as a proposed prototype system—not a finished consumer-ready appliance. Its $500–$700 figure is a design-cost range stated in the poster’s consumer-research section, not a verified retail price.

How LEGO describes automation in its own factories

LEGO’s manufacturing explainer describes molded pieces traveling on conveyor belts into boxes. When a box is full, the molding machine signals a robot truck; grooves in the factory floor guide the truck to move the box to another conveyor. The company also describes machines that print details and snap together minifigure legs and other intricate pieces. This illustrates why factory automation is more than an arm: sensing, material handling, specialized machinery, and coordination with the production process all matter. LEGO says molding machines operate at about 450°F (230°C), and molds cool before pieces are ejected in about 10 seconds; the page does not display a publication date. LEGO also describes brick precision as “1/10th of a hair’s width”—the manufacturer’s phrasing, not an independently stated tolerance. See LEGO bricks in the making.

What research on robots handling LEGO actually shows

Assembly and disassembly from demonstrations

A 2023 paper by Ruixuan Liu, Yifan Sun, and Changliu Liu, “Robotic LEGO Assembly and Disassembly from Human Demonstration,” studies learning assembly and disassembly sequences from human demonstrations. It describes using a digital twin to check whether a learned sequence is operable and a custom end-effector for physical manipulation. The reported hardware is a FANUC LR-mate 200id/7L industrial robot.

Tooling and transfer across robot arms

The same authors’ 2023 paper, “A Lightweight and Transferable Design for Robust LEGO Manipulation,” describes a custom end-of-arm tool and robot-motion optimization, with deployment to a FANUC LR-mate 200id/7L and a Yaskawa GP4. Its abstract reports a 100% success rate for the paper’s stated experimental evaluation. That result is specific to the authors’ experimental setup; it is not a general success guarantee for all LEGO handling or industrial robots.

What a LEGO model can—and cannot—stand in for

A LEGO sorter can make the logic of automation visible: a part arrives, a sensor produces information, code selects an action, and a mechanism moves the part. An actual workplace robot is part of a larger engineered system, with requirements for payload, repeatability, safety, integration, and cost that these sources do not quantify comparably. Treat the model as a way to understand the sequence and coordination, not as evidence that it matches industrial performance or workplace safety provisions.
