It also matters whether the claim describes colors in the content or colors a particular display can actually reproduce.
What does wide color gamut mean?
A color gamut is the range of colors that a color space or device can represent. A gamut is called “wide” when it extends beyond a comparison gamut. Without that comparison, WCG does not identify one universal boundary.
The term can describe a color space used to encode content, a video system, or a display’s capability. These are related but distinct: content may be encoded for a broad gamut even when the screen showing it cannot reproduce that full range. The Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative (FADGI) gives the example of a Rec. 709-limited monitor being unable to accurately render Rec. 2020 content (FADGI, Significant Properties for Digital Video (2024)).
How do sRGB, Rec. 709 and Rec. 2020 relate to WCG?
These names refer to defined color standards, not generic quality levels. They provide reference points for discussing gamut, but a standard’s target gamut is not a measurement of a particular screen.

| Term | What it identifies | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| sRGB | The ICC registry identifies sRGB as IEC 61966-2-1:1999 and lists its gamut as CRT-based (ITU-R BT.709-3), with RGB primaries and a D65 white point (ICC sRGB registry entry). | sRGB and Rec. 709 are closely related in primaries, but that does not make every aspect of their encoding identical. |
| Rec. 2020 / BT.2020 | The ICC registry identifies BT.2020 with the 2015 ITU-R Recommendation and an extended gamut with defined primaries (ICC BT.2020 registry entry). | The standard defines a target; it does not establish how much of that target a particular display covers. |
| IEC 61966-12-1:2020 | This IEC standard defines color-gamut metadata for video and similar systems. Its metadata may be associated with wide-gamut content or display equipment, and BT.2020 color spaces were added (IEC 61966-12-1:2020). | It is metadata guidance, not a consumer monitor certification rule. |
Does WCG mean HDR?
No. Gamut describes the range of colors that can be represented; it is not, by itself, a definition of dynamic range. The IEC description of IEC 61966-12-1:2020 concerns gamut metadata and wide-gamut video content or equipment, not a claim that WCG and HDR are the same thing (IEC).
What should you check when comparing display gamut claims?
For a monitor or other display, look for the named target gamut and a reported or independently measured coverage of that target. A percentage is meaningful only when you know what it measures: coverage of a named gamut is not interchangeable with a gamut-area figure. Also consider whether the display and the rest of the workflow can handle the content accurately.

- [Adjustable Stand] Adjust height, tilt, swivel, and pivot for maximum comfort.
- Name the target: Check whether the claim refers to sRGB/Rec. 709, DCI-P3, Rec. 2020, or another defined gamut.
- Read the metric carefully: Determine whether a percentage means coverage of that target or a different area measure.
- Separate range from accuracy: A wider gamut indicates potential to represent more colors, not how accurately the display reproduces them.
- Consider the workflow: Content, display capability, and color management all affect the result you see.
The ICC advises choosing a working space close to a display’s native gamut for most purposes. It also describes calibration as a way to support accurate color representation and matching across displays, print, or projection (ICC display calibration guidance). A wide-gamut label alone does not establish color accuracy.
