An AI answer can cite your website and still get your words wrong. The link shows a relationship to a source; it does not prove that the generated claim accurately reflects the page. If an answer repeats an error from your site, check both the page and the answer before deciding what went wrong.
Why an AI answer can repeat a mistake on your site
Answer engines may select a passage, summarize it, or connect it to a generated claim. In doing so, they can lose the context that tells a reader how to interpret the passage. A satirical post, a quoted claim, a caveat, or a correction can be flattened into something that reads as factual advice.
Ofcom documented 2024 examples in which Google AI Overviews treated satirical Reddit posts as serious health or cooking advice, including suggestions involving glue on pizza, eating rocks, and gasoline in a recipe. These examples show that context loss has occurred; they do not establish how often it happens or that every AI answer behaves this way. Ofcom’s discussion paper describes the cases.
There may also be two separate errors: the original page may contain a mistake, and the answer engine may then misquote, misattribute, or omit context around it. Keep those issues distinct when reporting or correcting the incident.

What a citation does—and does not—tell you
A citation is a lead to inspect, not a guarantee that the cited page supports the exact sentence beside it. OpenAI warns that search results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, and recommends checking the cited page against the answer. OpenAI’s web-search guidance explains how to verify sources.
A qualitative study presented at ACM FAccT 2025 reported that participants encountered citations that did not support associated statements, as well as answers that presented only one side of source material. The study involved 21 participants; it documents their experiences, not a population-wide rate for all answer engines. Read the FAccT 2025 study.

How to verify the answer and correct your page
- Preserve the answer. Save the exact prompt, the full answer, the date, the displayed source links, and relevant location or account context. Answers can change, so a record helps establish what you actually saw.
- Open the cited URL. Find the passage the answer appears to rely on. Compare the precise claim with that passage and the surrounding paragraphs, including headings, quotations, satire labels, caveats, and correction notes.
- Classify the failure. Is your page itself wrong? Did the answer distort a correct passage? Is the citation unrelated or too narrow to support the claim? More than one can be true.
- Correct your page transparently if it is wrong. Fix the factual statement and retain an appropriate correction record or update note. Make clear what changed and when; do not silently rewrite history if the correction matters to readers.
- Keep the platform’s part separate. If your page was accurate but the answer misrepresented it, preserve the evidence and use the answer engine’s available feedback or reporting route. A page correction does not itself establish that the engine will update immediately, and no guaranteed refresh time is established.
What published measurements can—and cannot—tell you
A 2026 preprint by Haofei Xu, Umar Iqbal, and Jacob M. Montgomery analyzed 55,393 trending queries over 40 days, across 19 topical categories, and 98,020 atomic claims in Google AI Overviews. The authors classified 11.0% of claims as unsupported by cited pages. That figure applies to their study’s sample and method; it is not a universal error rate for every query, product, or time period. See the authors’ preprint.
Google Search head Liz Reid said in 2024 that AI Overviews were usually wrong because of “misinterpreting queries, misinterpreting a nuance of language on the web, or not having a lot of great information available.” The Associated Press reported the statement while covering Google’s May 2024 changes. Read the AP report. That explanation is consistent with why context and source quality matter, but it does not diagnose any particular answer about your site.

How to improve the odds that your page is understood
For Google’s generative Search features, Google points publishers to its established Search guidance: make useful, people-first content and meet technical eligibility requirements. Google says special files such as llms.txt are not required for inclusion. These practices are not a promise that a page will be cited or summarized correctly. Google Search Central’s AI features guidance includes its eligibility and Search Console information.
Make the page’s meaning clear to a human reader: label satire, distinguish quotations from your own claims, put key caveats near the statement they qualify, and date corrections. These are clarity practices, not “AEO hacks” or guarantees of how an answer engine will use the page.

When the incident is part of a first-person account
If you say your site became the source of an answer, keep enough evidence for readers to check that claim: the original page and its date, the exact prompt and output, the cited URL, and any corrected version. Without those records, the broader failure modes are documented, but the specific anecdote cannot be independently established.
