A digital media uploader is a device or feature that sends media files to another system. In DLNA terminology, M-DMU means Mobile Digital Media Uploader: a mobile device role for sending content to a Digital Media Server (DMS) or Mobile Digital Media Server (M-DMS). A digital camera or mobile phone can be an example, but compatibility depends on the specific sender and receiving server.
What does “digital media uploader” mean?
The phrase has two uses. In DLNA, it names a defined device role: a mobile device sends content to a compatible server. In everyday software and service descriptions, an “uploader” can mean a feature or app that transfers photos, video, audio, or other media files. That broader use depends on the named platform; it is not one universal device class.
The International Electrotechnical Commission’s IEC 62481-2:2013 glossary identifies M-DMU as an MHD/DLNA device class: IEC 62481-2:2013.
What does M-DMU do in DLNA?
An M-DMU is the sender. Sony describes these wireless devices as sending content to a DMS or M-DMS and gives digital cameras and mobile phones as examples. Those examples do not mean that every camera or phone supports DLNA uploads; the relevant capabilities must be supported at both ends. See Sony’s explanation of DLNA device classes.

How is an uploader different from a downloader?

The labels describe capabilities, not mutually exclusive types of consumer device. A phone may support more than one role. Sony distinguishes the M-DMU and M-DMD roles on its DLNA device-classes page.
What is needed for a DLNA upload to work?
- A sending device with the relevant capability: being a phone or Wi-Fi camera alone does not establish M-DMU support.
- A receiving server that accepts uploads: the DMS or M-DMS must have upload functionality enabled or implemented.
- Matching practical requirements: check the specific devices for supported formats, file-size limits, and network requirements; the cited role descriptions do not specify universal values for these.
A DLNA Upload/Download Use Case document in the University of Stuttgart repository says the receiving server needs to implement optional upload functionality or it will not accept upload requests. In that documented use case, an Upload Controller sends content using HTTP POST; this is an implementation detail of that example, not a universal requirement for every uploader. How to interpret the term outside DLNA
When an app, website, or service calls something a “digital media uploader,” identify what it actually uploads and where the files go. It may send files to a cloud account, a local server, or another destination, but the generic phrase alone does not establish the protocol, storage location, supported formats, or compatibility. Look to that service’s own documentation for those details.
