In U.S. Federal Communications Commission rules, Advanced Wireless Service (AWS) is a licensed radiocommunication service associated with specified spectrum bands. It is not a general name for advanced wireless technology. The regulation defines the term in the singular, even though it is often referred to as “Advanced Wireless Services.”
What does Advanced Wireless Service mean in FCC rules?
Under 47 CFR § 27.4, “Advanced Wireless Service (AWS)” means “a radiocommunication service licensed pursuant to this part for the frequency bands specified in § 27.5(h), 27.5(j), or 27.5(k).” Read the current definition in 47 CFR § 27.4.
That definition is specific to the FCC’s Part 27 rules and the spectrum bands those rules identify. It does not define a cellular generation, a particular radio interface, or a broad class of equipment. The plural wording appears in common usage, but the defined regulatory term is singular: “Advanced Wireless Service (AWS).”
Which frequency bands are included?
The definition points to three clauses in 47 CFR § 27.5. They include different frequency groupings and arrangements; AWS is therefore not one continuous block of spectrum. See the frequency provisions in 47 CFR § 27.5.

| Rule clause and familiar label | Frequency range and arrangement |
|---|---|
| § 27.5(h): AWS-1/AWS-3 groupings | Paired 1710–1755 MHz and 2110–2155 MHz; paired 1755–1780 MHz and 2155–2180 MHz; and unpaired 1695–1710 MHz blocks. |
| § 27.5(j): AWS-4 | 2000–2020 MHz paired with 2180–2200 MHz. The rule divides each side into two paired 10 MHz blocks. |
| § 27.5(k) | Paired 1915–1920 MHz and 1995–2000 MHz spectrum. |
“Paired” means that spectrum is specified in two separated frequency ranges for a paired arrangement; “unpaired” identifies spectrum listed without a corresponding paired range in that clause. For exact regulatory language and any current legal interpretation, consult the current rule text rather than relying on historical diagrams.
How do AWS-1, AWS-3, and AWS-4 differ?
AWS-1
The familiar AWS-1 pairing is 1710–1755 MHz with 2110–2155 MHz. An FCC band-plan document illustrates this arrangement, but it was last reviewed or updated on April 20, 2006. Its diagram also labels 1755–1850 MHz as Federal Government exclusive spectrum; because that document is dated, it should not be treated as a statement of present legal status. See the FCC’s AWS-1 band-plan document.

AWS-3
AWS-3 commonly refers to the groupings in § 27.5(h) that include 1695–1710 MHz, 1755–1780 MHz, and 2155–2180 MHz. NTIA reported that the FCC completed an auction for licenses in those bands on January 29, 2015. That is an auction milestone, not evidence of current license ownership or how extensively the spectrum is deployed. Read NTIA’s report on the AWS-3 auction completion.
AWS-4
AWS-4 refers to 2000–2020 MHz paired with 2180–2200 MHz under § 27.5(j). In a 2012 proceeding, the FCC described terrestrial mobile broadband service in these bands and discussed their co-primary allocation for Mobile Satellite Service and terrestrial Fixed and Mobile service, including existing Mobile Satellite Service authorizations at that time. That historical proceeding does not establish current license ownership or deployment. Read the FCC’s 2012 AWS-4 proceeding.

- Upgraded TinySA Ultra+ ZS406: Built on the latest HW V0.4.6, the AURSINC TinySA Ultra+ ZS406 features a 4.0 inch 480*320 touchscreen display for intuitive operation. It comes with a pre-installed 32GB micro SD card for convenient on-site data storage and sharing, and a built-in 5000mAh rechargeable battery that delivers at least 3 hours of continuous operation on a full charge
- Wide Frequency Range & Adjustable RBW: Covers a measurement range of 100kHz to 5.4GHz, with Ultra mode extending up to 6GHz. Switchable resolution bandwidth from 200Hz to 850kHz enables fast and accurate measurements; the 200Hz minimum RBW clearly separates adjacent signals and supports SSB two-tone intermodulation testing. It includes a 0–31dB input step attenuator and displays up to 450 points for gapless full-band coverage
- 2-in-1 Analyzer & Signal Generator: Doubles as a signal generator when not used for spectrum analysis. It outputs MF/HF/VHF sine waves from 100kHz to 900MHz, UHF square waves from 800MHz to 4.4GHz, and mixed signals from 4.4GHz to 5.4GHz. A built-in calibration signal generator supports automatic self-test and low-input calibration for sustained measurement accuracy
- Excellent Phase Noise performance: -108dB/Hz at 100kHz offset and -115dB/Hz at 1MHz offset (at 30MHz), with a DANL as low as -166dBm/Hz. An integrated LNA provides 20dB of extra gain for low-level signals (effective only below 3.5GHz). The default 800MHz maximum frequency eliminates the need to switch between low and high ranges, enabling full-band monitoring in a single sweep
- PC Control: Connects to a PC via USB for data transfer and device control through the TinySA-APP, using Serial over USB (CDC) protocol with a full command set for measurements and internal settings. Drivers install automatically on Windows and are natively built into the Linux kernel
Is AWS a technology such as LTE or 5G?
No. In the FCC definition, AWS identifies a licensed service tied to specified spectrum, not a radio technology. The term also appears in technical standards contexts: for example, 3GPP lists a report titled “Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) extension band for LTE,” initially planned for Release 13, with creation recorded on April 8, 2015 and later version activity in 2015 and 2016. That use of AWS in an LTE band name does not change the meaning of the FCC rule. See the 3GPP report record.

What should readers take away?
- For U.S. regulatory purposes, AWS is the Part 27 licensed radiocommunication service defined by reference to specified bands.
- The referenced provisions cover several distinct spectrum groupings, including paired and unpaired ranges.
- AWS-1, AWS-3, and AWS-4 are useful band labels, not names for one technology or one contiguous frequency block.
- Historical FCC and NTIA documents describe proceedings and events at particular dates; they do not, by themselves, establish current spectrum holdings or deployment.
