DecaTxt is a compact, one-handed Bluetooth keyboard that uses ten physical keys to enter letters, numbers, symbols, and commands through single presses and chords. Its small size can be useful when a conventional keyboard is inconvenient, but the trade-off is learning a different input system and finding a comfortable way to hold or brace the device.
How DecaTxt enters characters
Rather than assigning one physical key to every letter, DecaTxt combines presses on its ten keys to represent a larger set of characters and commands. The manufacturer says keys can be pressed simultaneously or in any order; ordinarily, a keystroke is sent when a pressed key is lifted. The manufacturer describes a few exceptions to that release behavior in its operating instructions.
The first ten letters are assigned to individual finger presses. Thumb keys shift the remaining letter groups, and using both thumbs applies a shift command. Color-coded labels on the current product are intended to help users navigate the mapping. The instructions also describe repeat behavior for space, backspace, tab, and cursor keys when held briefly.
Holding and positioning the keyboard
The manufacturer’s instructions describe placing the textured side against the palm and bracing the other side against the body or another comfortable surface. They say DecaTxt can be used with either hand, or with both hands if preferred. The current product page promotes left- or right-hand use.

Because the device is small and held differently from a standard keyboard, consider whether the grip and key reach feel comfortable for your hand. Hackaday’s 2021 discussion raised ergonomic questions and noted that the device appeared to come in one size; that is commentary, not the result of ergonomic testing. Its comparison describes the Infogrip BAT as larger and more desktop-oriented, but current BAT listings and specifications are not established here. For either device, compare overall size and housing, hand posture, learning system, compatibility with your devices, and current availability rather than assuming one will fit everyone.
What the learning curve may feel like
The keys’ printed colors and the manufacturer’s mapping provide a guide, but chord input takes practice. In a 2017 review of an earlier DecaTxt, The Gadgeteer’s reviewer reported that basic words became manageable with practice, while punctuation, numbers, and symbols took more effort. The reviewer also found typing slower and more error-prone than conventional touch typing. That is one person’s experience with an earlier model, not a controlled speed comparison or a prediction of how every user will perform.

DecaTxt may be worth exploring if you want compact one-handed input or an alternative to a conventional keyboard. Whether it is practical for you will depend on learning the chord map, your hand comfort, and how it works with your devices. The available sources do not establish clinical accessibility outcomes or show that the keyboard is suitable for every person with a disability.
What is confirmed about the current DecaTxt 3
The manufacturer’s current homepage promotes “DecaTxt 3!” and highlights color-coded labels, physical switches, vibration alerts for mode changes, pocket portability, and charging for a few hours for use it says can last all week. These are manufacturer claims. The page does not provide a DecaTxt 3 revision-specific technical datasheet, so verify details with the seller before relying on them.
Older campaign specifications should not be treated as DecaTxt 3 specifications. The historical Indiegogo campaign described Bluetooth 4.0, dimensions of approximately 3.25 × 2.25 × 0.875 inches, a weight of 2 ounces (56 grams), about a week of battery life, and about four hours to charge. Those figures relate to the campaign-era product, not a verified current revision.
The manufacturer’s instructions call for a mini-USB cable and say a red glow on the zero key indicates charging; the light goes out when charging is complete. The instructions do not establish whether the mini-USB connector applies to DecaTxt 3. Check the current device and seller information for its connector and included accessories.
Pairing and basic troubleshooting
The manufacturer describes vibration patterns for caps lock, number lock, returning to normal mode, F-key swapping, and successful pairing. If the keyboard stops responding, its instructions recommend removing it from the device’s Bluetooth settings and pairing it again.
- Remove the existing Bluetooth entry: Open your device’s Bluetooth settings, find DecaTxt in the paired-device list, and choose the option to forget or remove it. The exact label varies by device.
- Pair again: Put DecaTxt into pairing mode as described in its instructions, then select it from the Bluetooth device list. The manufacturer’s instructions identify a vibration pattern for successful pairing.
- Check charging if needed: The instructions say the zero key glows red while charging and the light goes out when full. Confirm the connector for your revision before choosing a cable.
Where to check availability
The manufacturer’s current homepage links US purchasers to its own store and international buyers to an eBay store; it also links to a Kickstarter campaign. Stock, campaign status, prices, and included accessories can change, so check the relevant seller directly. A 2017 review linked to an Amazon listing for an earlier DecaTxt, which does not establish that DecaTxt 3 is currently available there.
