Applied Materials said its Epi xP Centura, introduced in November 1999, could reduce overall epi wafer production costs by more than 30% by integrating processing steps on one platform. That was a company claim reported at launch—not an independently verified customer result or a figure established for today’s equipment.
What the Epi xP Centura integrated
Applied Materials combined pre- and post-epitaxy processing on the Epi xP Centura. Epitaxy, or epi, grows a crystalline layer on a wafer. In the system’s FLO-Zone configuration, oxidation followed epitaxy: the tool deposited an oxide layer on the wafer before it left the equipment. Applied presented this integration as a way for one system to perform work that otherwise might require two, with potential throughput and cleaning-cost benefits. EE Times reported the launch details and Applied’s claims in November 1999; it did not independently validate performance. A later Applied Materials document also confirms the November 1999 introduction and the integration of pre- and post-epi processes to reduce total production costs. Applied’s company document
What the cost figures mean
| Figure | Scope and attribution |
|---|---|
| More than 30% | Applied Materials’ potential reduction in overall costs for the integrated system, as reported by EE Times in 1999. It is not an independently measured customer outcome. |
| More than 90% | Applied Materials’ potential reduction in post-epi cleaning costs associated with FLO-Zone, as reported by EE Times in 1999. This is a cleaning-cost claim, not a total-cost figure. |
| More than 10 | Applied Materials’ description of the Epi xP system’s new features, as reported by EE Times in 1999. |
The two cost percentages refer to different scopes and should not be combined. The 1999 report does not establish how much customers actually saved, under what production conditions, or whether the claimed reductions were realized in practice. Applied’s general manager of the Epi Division, Grant Imper, said the integration let customers use “one system to do the work of two.” That was the company’s explanation of the design’s intended cost advantage, not independent evidence of savings. EE Times, November 1999
Availability at the time of launch
Applied said the Epi xP Centura was available as a new system and as an upgrade package for its existing Epi Centura installed base when it announced the product. That historical statement does not establish whether Epi xP upgrades, service, or parts remain available today. EE Times, November 1999

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How the announcement fit its market context
The 1999 report cited Rose Associates’ estimate that demand for 200 mm epi wafers would grow at a 32% compound annual rate from 1999 to 2003. It also reported Rose Associates’ silicon epi consumption figures: 487 million square inches in 1999 and a forecast 1.469 billion square inches in 2003. These were period estimates and forecasts published in 1999, not current market measurements. EE Times, November 1999
How Epi xP relates to later Centura epi systems
Applied Materials describes later or current systems under the Centura name, but the available product information does not establish that they are the same model as the 1999 Epi xP or that they retain its specific cost claims.

Applied’s current-era announcement explains that epitaxy has long been used in leading-edge logic, where crystalline material grown in a transistor channel can improve performance. The products’ names alone are not enough to establish a direct technical or economic lineage from Epi xP; comparisons require details such as generation, application, integrated steps, wafer size, chamber configuration, and the evidence behind any cost or productivity claim.
